I finished uni few years back. Now while applying for a PhD, I am asked to provide academic referees. I cannot do it. What option do I have?

Most universities used to keep records of their students for a number of years which enabled them give references on request (your old course or project tutor would supply the reference). Data protection laws may mean that they don't do this anymore, but it's worth getting in touch to find out. You should give a recent or current employer (academic or not) as a referee as well.

I had six years between my degree and my PhD commencing and didnt maintain contact with my old Uni. However they were more than willing to provide a reference once I explained my eagerness to go into research. It may seem embarrasssing to email and ask if they remember who you were but it is to some extent part of their job. I would be very suprised if your uni didnt have a record of you somewhere. Your grade will tell them of your ability - all they really want is comfirmation of your attendance and that you werent a nutter..
