Day 1 Report:
Ayyy! What a day! Doing field work while trying to write can be a nightmare - but enough of the excuses - here's what I accomplished from my list yesterday:
15 min Focused Writing on MT and Technology
1 Fieldwork Entry (Not the 2 I had aimed for!)
and in all honesty - only about 5 MIN focused outline for Conference Paper - then I realized I owed my advisor something, switched gears, yada yada yada
Not a great start, but on the plus side got some great field work in yesterday. Thanks for helping to keep me on track!
I'll post my goals for today in a separate post!
Yup anyone can participate - we look forward to having you join after your holiday! ENJOY!!
This accountability has already been helpful for me today as I work through my list. Just knowing you guys are out there and will be checking for a post from me tonight with an update is a source of motivation.
See you tonight!
Okay - Here We Go! Day 1 of Accountability:
Just as a quick note of explanation (not that it is necessary here!) - I am an anthropologist currently doing research in Argentina, but I am also needing to write up simultaneously. So my writing goals may be a bit dif/modest than most - because primarily I"m out in "the field" doing interviews throughout the day.
Day 1 Writing Goals:
1) 15 Min of Focused Writing on topic of MT and Technology
2) Field notes (2 entries)
3) 15 Min of Focused Outlining for Conference Paper
Happy to meet others who enjoy the book too - its been a real source of motivation for me! If you're interested, we could set up and accountability schedule with each other (perhaps email is best for that), and let others join in/partner/rotate as they want.
My first idea was that it would be great to have someone check in with me 5 x a week (every weekday) by email, instant message, Skype, what-have-you. Basically - just someone familiar with my writing goals who can hold me accountable through their gentle reminders. I will do the same for them - nothing too time consuming for either one of us (just quick messages). Just enough to encourage to keep on keepin' on.
I'm also having difficult with everyday consistency and progress -and as I posted earlier today - I'm looking for partners in accountability! If anyone is interested - let me know. Often its easier to keep someone else on track, and have them do the same for you.
I'm new here, so have patience if this topic has been previously covered. I'm currently reading (and trying to stick to!) Joan Bolker's "Writing Your Dissertation in Fifteen Minutes a Day."
Everyone knows that 15 minutes a day isn't actually enough - its just the effort to work consistently as part of an everyday routine that matters. I am really struggling to hold myself accountable, and I thought I might reach out in order to find support - and support others.
It would be great to find and connect with other people also trying to work daily on their dissertations, in order to provide some online accountability. Basically, I am looking for a fellow ABD who is willing to check in with me 5 X a week (every weekday) around the progress of my writing. I vow to be completely honest with them (and myself) about where I am and how much I'm getting done. In return, I would do the same for someone who is also struggling to remain consistent with their progress.
It would be great to get a whole group of us together, so that we can really support consistent, honest, everyday progress!
