Hello everybody!
I am a first-year PhD student at Hong Kong University (HKU) in Politics, and recently a big question is making me struggling thought the days:
Will I be able to get some academic opportunities back in Europe or North America (US, Canada) after the PhD here?
Most of my peers and past PhD students are from China, and they all came back there, while my perspectives are to go back to the West. However, and besides the difficulties we meet in finding a job in our fields, I don't know whether holding a PhD from Hong Kong will have any positive effect on my future career or if I will be likely "grounded" in Asia for a long time.
I really like my research and I have enough freedom (sometimes too much maybe) to experimenting with new ideas and widen both my literature and methods. However, the perspective of a geographic constriction is making me think of changing something on my path. I am also considering to apply for an MPhil in a European university and start all over again in one year.
Is there anyone who passed through these problems or someone who have any hint/suggestion?
Thanks a lot :)
