Having been in a relationship with someone else doing a PhD there was not open competition but when he was struggling with his PhD my publications, scholarships, and approaching the end of the PhD were a obvious source of tension.

Now when dating, the PhD does sometimes appear a source of competition or "special status" - even when the other people have had achievements of their own that are equally impressive :( I've often been tempted to just not mention it... but then what to talk about!? ;)

Hi all - best of luck to all you academic job-seekers. I passed my PhD last summer and have held a temporary lectureship since then. That ends in 3 weeks and I have not found a job. :(

I finished my PhD late last summer and have been teaching at a university part-time since then. I have been on a temporary contract and that expires in a matter of weeks. I simply cannot find any other academic posts or postdocs (and I have applied for the few that come up)... so I think I have come to the end of my academic route for the time being. It's awfully hard to do the last few weeks of the lecturing with this on my mind. I know I have been very lucky to get even this temporary contract but it is rather sad. My field(s) has been decimated by the cuts and will take years to recover if indeed it does. I will be very sad to empty out my office.

Still I am looking into teaching as a career now and am making plans to do the neccesary application steps for that. So wish me luck. :)

Still glad I did the PhD though, sometimes, I am trying to get a book proposal accepted with a press, and that would be exciting if it is! :)

Best of luck to you all!

Sorry to hear that Pam W. Musuems are a really hard sector to break in now, like academia heavily hit by cuts. Best of luck.

I have almost given up on getting an academic / museum job and am applying to re-train as a teacher in a years time.

Happy New Year everyone! I know it is term time again because my blackberry has been beeping all morning as my boss emails through requests. One of them includes this article and I have no idea where to find it - my library does not subscribe and I could do with earning browning points by getting it to her asap - can anybody help?! :)
