Hi all,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QA1R3henIhw&feature=related
Just wishing everyone all the best. It's time for me to 'get a life' and to stop using this forum as a substitute for an existence. I wish everyone all the best with their PhD's and future careers. If I have any questions I reserve to the right to pop back and if anyone can offer me work send me a PM please...(up)
Cheers!!!(up)
BusyBee, I hope you can. I actually didn't find it that stressful and just had writers block on one occasion but someone on here got me through that with good advice and I was fine the next day. I love listening to music and so I always had music playing while I was writing and I knew I wanted to finish at the same time as the funding. I just got into a frame of mind where I knew it was something I was going to have to do sooner or later (no getting away from in) and so I just got on with it. I didn't work a massive amount of hours every day but when I worked, I was extremely focused and productive.
You can do it!!!
I'd say I wrote up in less than six months and so I hope this helps. I made a clear plan of all I needed to do and decided to aim for at least 500 words a day. It doesn't sound a lot but equals about 15,000 words per month (my writing was of good quality though). I was able to tick off my achievements and this made me feel good and encouraged me to keep at it. Very honestly, for me the hardest part was starting...
There is a one goal thread which you might find helpful as people motivate and encourage each other.
Others find a tomatoes thing helpful but I've never tried it.
I hope it all goes well.

Hi Alan,
First of all, many get stressed by their PhD and have to juggle it with other demands and so you're not alone but I understand you anxiety.
Time management will be key for you and quality time (working very productively) very important.
Plan what exactly it is you need to do to get finished, determine what you can do in manageable chunks, draw up a tick list and watch it get smaller as you knock the tasks away.
Come here for encouragement and support as honestly you're not alone.
You can do it, if you want to(up)
Best of luck!

Hi Omafume,
1. Look around for projects that interest you and contact supervisors you'd like to work with because you like their work. Don't go by the university alone. It depends on the demand, number of applicants and other factors but generally you need a 2:1 or above and a masters.
2. You'll have to complete an application form or forms most likely but follow the first point I made and take it from there.
3. I suspect it's a bit of both in the some PhD places are given on the basis of who you know but others are given on merit.

Hope this helps.
