Best software for managing References

P

Dear All,
I have just started with my PhD and I get assignments for which I have to write about 2000 words. I will have to start using a reference manager from a couple of weeks. Which software is the best? I would really appreciate if you would let me know the pros and cons of each software. I am not great with technology , so a software which is simple helps.
Thanks in advance!

J

Endnote.

No need to know about pro's and con's. It's the most often used reference software and therefore it is easiest to find a specialist in your university who can retrieve data if they got lost. Plus, it's free.

Yep, Endnote. You won't regret. And you can always ask questions at this forum if you can't find your way around it...

EndNote if you are using MS Word.

EndNote ... but only up as far as version X ... Version XI seems to be buggy (but that could be fixed by now).

Enquire at your college if there is a training program running - if you don't, many of the simpler tasks would be difficult.
Also, if using Endnote, update ALL information available to each article (including downloading the article and then linking to the relevant Endnote record). After a while (a few weeks) it'll be second nature.
Another tip (well, what I do) is if I print an article and have it stored in Endnote, I put the Endnote record # on the hard copy. I then store them in that fashion i.e. in numerical order. If you are using Endnote to search thro' abstracts and notes using the Search functionality, all you need to do then is get the relevant record # and see if you have already printed it.

Good luck with the research and ta for the advise earlier. (up)

I've only used Reference Manager, so I don't know how EndNote compares.

No idea what it's like because I haven't used it myself, but there's a new system called Connotea (http://www.connotea.org/) which is an *online* reference management system. If you find yourself working from multiple locations/computers, perhaps this would be something to consider?
