First paper presentation - gulp!

H

I've been to a few conferences before, but at the weekend I will be presenting a paper for the first time. Having received the agenda recently, it's a small group of people on a fairly general topic, so no others specialists in my field.

Anywho, for those who have done this a lot - or at all! - do you have any tips? I'm just working now on converting my chapter into a few brief slides, as I've been told often enough to Keep It Simple Stupid, and to try and ad-lib as much as possible.

Much appreciated,

I'd agree with that advice - keep it simple. If the audience aren't specialists in your topic then don't assume they'll know anything about the major issues in your field. I'd think about what would be particularly interesting for them - and that may not be the same as would be interesting for someone who does understand your field. Presenting something that shows how your work relates to a real-world problem, or to the main issue that unites everyone in the room (assuming that there is some kind of central theme!) would probably work well. Good luck with it!

Thanks for your advice - much appreciated!
