thank u. i will enquire at the uni when i start how to go about applying for some kind of funding. iv been told i can get a discretionary payment to help with travel etc. means tested and i dont pay it back. so good news. iv already spoken to the uni about this and will apply. il ask when i start what i can apply for..for the next year etc. at least iv paid this years fees in full in advance. gosh! getting so close now and some nerves fluttering in tummy now.. in anticipation of the work ahead of me...the years ahead... thanks for advice xxx
pamplemousse....well done (up). i missed out a distinction by about 2% four years ago. i finished my master of science last year with a merit (up)
but hey! im pleased...i tell myself well done... im a single parent and have done this all by myself. i start my PhD in a couple of weeks. im self funding...i will stick it out, muddle through it, cry through it, laugh through it (i hope) and i will get my doctorate and i will say to myself..well done..havnt u achieved so much!
so pamplemousse....well done...big pat on the back....arn't u clever? arn't we all :-) (up)
gosh! i wish i'd got the distinctions...but gosh! im so so very proud of what i have got..
good luck xxxx
thank u. will hunt. just wondered as he/she came across so distraught after crying for hours etc. was just checking to see that progress went well and couldnt find anything. thanks. will check. enjoying my xmas break. havnt done much pre-phd research. decided to enjoy my little time left. merry xmas xx
i did - supported myself thro my masters. tho i did the moving away bit for my first degree. took my kids and moved many counties away. they are settled and i finished both bachelors and masters. i did support myself and im doing same for my PhD i start in a couple of weeks (jan). so...is doable (up)
i am self funding. i agree with badhaircut that some unis accept lower calibre students due to their spending power. im going to a higher status uni for my PhD. my old uni is well known for accepting low standard students for PhD due to their having the money to pay. i know of a student who had all his masters work written for him. the uni knew of this, had a lot of complaints, but as no one would put their name down to officially complain, they let him graduate. he is now doing his PhD at the same uni with funding from his govt (international). a year on, this student is struggling as he doesnt even know basic methodological concepts. this i know from very recent conversations with this person. i am just so glad that i went elsewhere for my PhD. my new uni has such a high standard, this guy would never have got in. i am pleased to say, they went on academic ability not on paying power. i am so pleased to be starting at this much better university (up)
