endnote - what does it actually do?
J

I have started putting some stuff in, seems to be OK, but how do you get it to give a journal a unique ref number? Can't find anywhere to do that. Also, if you use Harvard, which I do, it doesn't seem to give the volume number in bold, as expected, If I put it in in bold, will that affect what it shows if I have to use another ref system. I've a big pile of papers that I'm thinking I ought to get on the system before I do anything else , so at least I have an idea of what I have lurking in the filing cabinets!

29th February is looming..

I always said I would never get married, and stuck to my guns - until one day when it all changed and I met and married someone within 6 weeks.

decent filing system?
J

pink, I hope you have backed everything up away from your computer on a disk or memory stick. I was so glad I did this a few weeks ago as when I went 'save' on the computer it suddenly did a complete wobbly and said it couldn't save anything as the file ending was not valid and lost the lot,not just the last bit, the effort of several days if not weeks went into computer oblivion. Luckily the backup copy was fine, just half a page went into the ether - although of course that was the most erudite and succinct bit of writing I had produced on the subject in hand and I never managed to reproduce it *sigh*

Are there any good books on the subject? I'm part time and I work in education and when I'm off, the uni isn't working (I don't mean it is broken - at least I don't think it is ) so I can't get to the course, the one group of part-timers they never seem to cater for are those of us doing education - which I find a bit ironic really

Transcription issues - Qualitative Research
J

i think it is usual to do your own transcriptions, and partly this may be due to the confidentiality/anonymity issues. for example say you gave it to someone else to type up and they recognised a voice on the tape, or disclosed some of the contents to someone else who knew someone who had been interviewed. It isn't very likely, but you never know and if you have promised that the details will be known only to you - and anyone else in a group session, obviously - then you have to be careful that you abide by this otherwise you put your own research, and sometimes the research of others in the future, in a bad light. I'm writing my ethics bit at the moment - can you guess

Social Research - help with ideas on nuclear power
J

clicked wrong button there
for your paticipants perhaps you need to find out if any live near a nuclear power station or near where one might be. what they know about the alternatives, have they read/heard anything recently, could you produce some info (poster type or series of cards to get discussion going in a meaningful direction before or mid discussion.) Do they have an alternative, if you can find any paper cartoons do they influence their feelings. Brown/Cameron etc do they think any are convincing. does age affect their knowledge or response? how are you going to get your group? prey on people as they go to the restaurant/library/classes.don't forget you need to make sure they can't just go down a questionnaire ticking the same box etc.

just a quick think - because I'm supposed to be writing up my ethics bit at the moment, which is why I'm on here of course!

the sounds of silence..
J

i really can't work to music, people talking away in the background is entirely different though, and in fact even the uni resaurant is OK. However the library has a silent area where I tend to work,if not working at home, mainly because the rest of the library is so noisy it sounds more like a party going on! Weekends are different though, much quieter - probably the people there are the ones who can't think of any excuse for not getting their work in on Monday morning . The new thought is though that you should revise for exams in silence, so the conditions mimic the exam room conditions in which you will have to write down all the facts you have committed to memory - perhaps you should mention this to the niosy ones in the library otherwise get the libarian to do the dirty work and tellethem off

I was hoping it was going to be a way of keeping track of all those bits of paper with odd quotes on them which kind of get lost amongst the piles of paper on my desk. I've just spent half an hour looking for a bit of paper with info concerning ethics and would like to have a simple place to keep such notes -sigh

I've just bought a copy of this, it looks quite interesting, but is it as good as they suggest? Does it do more than just produce your ref list and keep tabs on that and collect refs from the internet? At the moment I'm thinking it is a bit like Access

pregnant at interview?

I think it will be important to tell them about your plans as this shows you have thought about, and planned, a solution. They may be wary of bringing the subject up, because of discrimination angles etc. but if you don't tell them and they don't ask they may well assume that you intend to bumble through which may reduce your chances of getting the position. I worked with a professor once who was so sexist it was beyond a joke, but then he was in his 70s at the time so was from a less enlightened age. First thing he told me was that although I had been the best candidate they had appointed someone else first (I had to wait for more funding to be available)as they wanted a man. He was also against women with more than one child working, but of course he wouldn't get away with either position nowadays - I hope!

HELP!!! with printing table

Excell is good!you can make it do loads of stuff if you ask it nicely, there may be a beginners course in your area,or if you need any specific help just ask on here. (just remember a computer can't point and laugh if you do something wrong...yet!)

HELP!!! with printing table

this is one thing that word does - probably because it can. One way round it may be to select all the text and use a smaller font. then when you have managed to get it to print off - and do try landscape if it is a wide table- you can take it to a photocopier and enlarge it so you can read it! If it is really annoying, copy and paste it into excel using the paste special command. (I'm assuming you know how to make the columns wider by double clicking between them etc)and it should print happily on as many sheets as it takes. You may be able to alter the margins a bit, or change the paper parameters, but make sure you have saved it before you do anything drastic, word doesn't like to be tampered with

I have a cat who does that job all the time, pile of papers on the table? She will be there sitting on the top and then of course she tries to get off, and sends them all flying in the process all she does then is the classic 'lick of dignity' and off she goes to see what else she can disrupt.
