hi GM,
I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I lost my mother suddenly towards the end of my phd (when I was still funded!). Then funding ended and I was practically struggling with everything.

When I was depressed - at my lowest points, I would take long walks, I wished the electric cables above would snap and just zap me off into oblivion, and I wished I could just die, but as usual, nothing happened, I had to walk home again and again, and go back to work on my thesis!

I can understand what you are going through, it is not easy but I promise you, it will get better over time, you will feel less isolated, and you will be all right.

When you have good days, do as much as you can on your thesis.

When you have a bad day, give yourself a break and kind of let the bad day just go by, sometimes there is not much we can do to stop the grief, sadness or even the phd stress, at that time it would be nice for us to be kind to ourselves and take a time-out from the phd.

Sending you a big hug

hi Ephiny
I am so sorry to read that your supervisor refused to read your thesis! I think it is possible to do corrections by yourself first. However, on that note, I would go with Barramack's suggestions. What RinaL has said about making a complaint, is quite true, there may be difficulty in getting a new supervisor.

Hang in there, don't lose hope

hi HazyJane thank you so much for your message! How are you doing?

RA = associate, yes this is in the UK.

These past few months I have been feeling a lost of self-confidence over jobs, but I am getting over this! I will do something (about making another application) today, really need to move forward.

I have a good friend who keeps telling me to open a take-out *LOL*, in truth, I don't know what I want to do exactly, all I know is I need a job to survive.

thanks again

hi everyone I'm job-hunting (again!)
I just saw an advert for an RA position, which this --

5 years relevant research experience normally including 1/2 years postdoctoral experience in a related field.

My question is -- 'five years relevant research experience' -- does this include my phd research?

So if I finished in 2013, and then only had one year work experience, would I still be able to apply??

thanks

hi, welcome to the forum
1) you need to get acceptance in the course first, once you are accepted, you can apply for the Tier 4 general visa ( see here https://www.gov.uk/tier-4-general-visa/overview )

2) sorry I don't know ACA eligibility, it would be worthwhile contacting the colleges directly

best of luck

hi redridinghood, I am so sorry for your loss -- on the other hand, I encourage you to carry on with submission so close. I lost my mother when I had almost finished writing up, I think it was during the first draft. Losing her is the most painful experience I have ever endured, now even joblessness (for me) is not as depressing.

Please be assured that time will help. Everytime you miss your sister, send her love from your heart, every time you want to talk to her, sit down and write a letter to her. For me, it would be to write and then burn the letter and place it under a tree. That makes me feel better.

I also went through this uncertainty about postdoc, whether it was worth it doing the phd, I think at some point most of us do go through. My sincere advice to you would be not to think about this at the moment, because you are close to submission, also you need time and space to heal the wound of losing your sister.

I embrace you, and hold you in love and light

hi redridinghood,
Yes I agree. If you recruit both men and women, you will most likely end up with more women. Older women are more patient, and are more likely willing to spend time answering questions. Ask a woman one question, if she answers, she will give you lots of answers. Ask a man more questions, if he answers, he will give you answers to those questions. Hope this helps.

hi albatross,
I'm sorry I'm not able to offer more advice/suggestions, but I really think your phd should be "saved" in some way, FOUR years of work is still work, it's not four weeks or four months, please try to find ways of working round this, and get your phd, worry about jobs later.

Don't give up **BIG HUG**
take care

Hi everyone,
When we insert quotes, do we include the gender and age of the person?
Is there a specific rule somewhere about this?

Is it really necessary (to insert gender, age, type of person who made the comment)? sorry for the stupid question, but if I have quotes from say a bunch of dentists, and they are all dentists, can I leave out the gender and age then?

example:
"I'd like to think my patients have understood what I've explained to them."

thanks

hi academicadam47
I went for my masters viva during my phd, no problems with my supervisor. However, writing up is another thing. It should be ok, as long as you allocate time for the MA dissertation, and don't mess it up with the phd -- for example if you need to do such-and-such amount of work due in at a certain date, then make sure you deliver.

Should be ok.
