hey matthew.. what is ur area of research, if u dont mind me asking? I have actually been looking at websites and forums specific to my subject and subscribing to sites like nature, newscientist (mainly for science students) .. dats where i hav found most relevant vacancies.. none of the UK job sites helped actually.. also, am not from the EU so am not actually eligible for any of the fellowships in UK.. There are more prospects in Scandinavia and US... depends on ur field though..
Hey guys, Just wondering if you could advice me on this one..
I have been offered a PhD position for a University in US that is not all that great, ranking wise.. it falls in the third tier.. however, the supervisor seems really helpful and encouraging, and the area of research is similar to what I am interested in.. Do you think I should go for it? Does it matter where you carried out your PhD studies when it comes to getting a Post-doc or a job?
On the other hand, there are some Institutes in Europe where I hav applied, which are a lot more reputed, however I am yet to get a response from them so I am not sure if I will get in.. but if i do.. What should I base my choice on??
Any international students looking for a PhD in Bioinformatics or related area?? I have exhausted all options in UK, and it seems like there aint any places with funding for internationals..
US didnt work out for me as I got all rejections :(
I am trying out the rest of Europe - Scandinavia, Germany.. I am mainly interested in Systems Biology, Comparative Genomics...
Can anyone suggest any good institutes with decent chances of getting a PhD position???
Thanks for the replies.. Whoaaa!!!!!!! You scared me Otto!! 90% dont make it.. well Sylvester I didnt really mean to make my post sound so depressing.. I love the idea of getting a PhD and am really eager to start.. but I wanted to get a realistic view of WHAT HAPPENS NEXT.. I just hope I can be 1 of the 10 people who actually survive!
Hello Current PhD Students!
I am quite keen to do a PhD (in Bioinformatics).. I am currently hunting for a position. I have always felt that if soooo many people have completed PhDs, so can I.. I am however very curious to find out if all of the PhD students eventually manage to get their degree??? I just wanted to get a realistic view of what to expect.. If you are aware of the true state of affairs (especially in Science fields) can you please let me know?? Do people actually drop out of PhD??? If so, how often does this happen?? I am not really a Genius nor am I exceptionally hardworking.. So I just want to make sure I am prepared enough, before diving into a PhD! Would be great if any of you could help!
