How does it work?

Would you get paid when on a PhD and is it simular to training?

Most people doing a PhD receive some sort of scholarship to cover fees and living expences. All PhDs envolve a high degree of 'learn by your own mistakes' training. Some however also contain some formal training, as well as 'on the job' tuition.

See our PhDs Explained and Funding sections for more information and links.

a high degree of 'learn by your own mistakes' training means that your supervisor is a s**t

Phd is much more than just a 'training'. some people find they spend much more money on reading a phd then invest in a house. so better decide that on your own!

I am fairly well off doing a PHd as I live in a cheap area and my stipend easily covers my outgoings - your deal depends on who funds you.
I really dont feel 'trained' at all - after a year and a half I have had no formal training - it is a development of skills rather than learning how to do 'new things'. Plus it is a damn hard job I work nearly every weekend and long hours with no recognition. Dont do it lightly!
