Viva! Las Vegas.

I passed my viva earlier this week - on the snowiest day!

It was exhilarating!

Dr. Aloha

S

Congrats Aloha, that is so awsome, well done!

S

Congratulations. Another comrade made it though the escape tunnel to the post-PhD world...

T

Nice one! Any tips, funny stories you can share with us?! Your best pre-viva tip?

S

Wonderful news, congrats Dr Aloha :-D

O

Congratulations!!
Thats wonderful news!!
:-)

Coastman asked for viva tips, funny stories...

My external examiner was starving and ate fruit (bananas, apples etc.) she'd brought with her from a tupperware throughout the 3 hour viva. She also bought her own teabags. She was idiosyncratic - and I hugely admired her for that.

She called 'a spade, a spade' and kissed me at the end and told me how much she'd enjoyed reading the thesis!

R

Congratulations, that's great news Dr Aloha!! (up):-)(up)

May I ask how it compared with your mock in terms of brutality of examining style, usefulness of preparation for the real thing etc?

PS great post title too, it's got me reaching for my Best of Elvis CD :-)

A

RubyW - brutality of mock was as much to do with examiners and their personal orthodoxies as it was with questions. In the actual viva, the two examiners came from different positions so it made for an interesting (and occasionally conflicting) dialogue, between themselves, as well as for me.

Both were very tough, examiners very prepared and experienced. I prepared well, mainly due to the shock of the mock. I think it was the preparation that stood me in good
stead.

Now to the future...

what was the time difference between the mock viva and the real viva? how did you go about preparing for your viva? and who gave you the mock viva, your sup?

S

Brilliant news Dr Aloha, congratulations!!! (up)(up)(up) Now you can relaaaaaaxxxxxx :-)

W

Aloha, you goer! Well done you. Well doc, I feel another rhyme coming on...mmm...let me think....

Aloha is now a doctor,
I reckon she'll soon be rich and own a helicopter,
She'll take her students for a ride,
and scare to death any that dare skive,
Now I know this may all seem kinda random,
but I'm so pleased and happy, so I'm comin' in at a tandem.

Well done once again - and fare thee well traveller!
