I am coming to the end of my PhD in education and I wonder why I bothered. The only work available seems to be part-time limited term contracts, and the pay is a lot less than I used to receive as a teacher before the PhD. I have applied for 8 post-doc fellowships, but they are generally given to natural scientists. Although I read in the THES that education lecturers are in short supply, I don't see any job advertisments out there. Does anyone have any insight?

Social Science is a washed up micky mouse subject with lettle worth - hence you can't find a job!

I think the fella above is being a little negative there. Social science is a broad subject area after all, so that seems a bit of a broad statement!

Try overseas. The international experience will be like gold. Try to get a job with some newspaper and write on topics in social sciences.

This is a very interesting topic, I am struggling with my PhD in social psychology and I often ask to myself, is it worth to work a lot, having little money? I fear to find myself afterwards with little chances to find a job in or out academia. Do you know how is the occupational situation after getting a PhD in social psychology or sociology?
