Canadian PhD

N

I'm currently doing a masters in the uk and am looking for PhDs in Canada. Does anyone know if funding there provides a grant for living costs or a "salary" as most funded phDs in the UK do and if so is it a comparable amount?
Thanks

P

In science PhD-s, the student must have some income, either from prof's grants or student's scholarship or a combination. If a prof advertises a position, this means he has funds to pay the student. The salary minimum in cheaper provinces is set 18000CAD/year, which is sufficient to live, but problematic to pay tuition fees and especially tickets to Europe :( But students are allowed to work part-time on the campus (without working permit) or outside, with a working permit. Unlike some countries in Europe, no restrictions are set for students as to their working hours besides their studies. So you can work your ass off . if you want :D

Hey there
I'm currently a grad student at the University of Toronto, moving here from Europe last winter. Here you get a grant of 23900 CAD/year, tax free, that would be quite good, but unfortunately in the end results to be sufficient to survive, when considering that you'd have to pay around 7000$/year in tuition and several accessory fees.
It's quite hard to save money, expecially for trips here in Canada or for travelling back home, and as a foreigner you can't easily access additional funding since most scholarships or grants are for Canadian citizens or permanent residents only.
Last but not least, take into account that probably your master won't be recognized and you'd have to officialy start as a master student and then reclassify to the PhD after around 1.5 yrs, taking a reclass exam.

Not to discourage you, but I've decided to move back to Europe ;-) . They seem to have quite a "protectionist" policy here and in other places things may be a lot easier. Despite my love for Canada, I'd probably be back as a postdoc :)

dontpanic, where in Europe are you moving back to? are you cancelling your phd? yeah, you are completely right, I (current student in QC) was previously in Denmark for my masters, being a foreign student there as well, and no tuition fees, and the income similar to PhD-s here. good old Europe :)

Porgrand, were you satisfied with your masters in Denmark?
