Is it possible that if your phd research group has collaboration with another group in e.g the USA you could get the opportunity to do some work over there or even go to work at an American uni after your phD.

Yes, that is possible. If you have to learn some technique there or if they have equipment that your lab hasn't got. But don't count on it- normaly each lab does what it is best at in the collaboration. Oh, and you can work in the usa after your PhD if you like- that has nothing to do with the collaboration. Just apply and see who wants to have u in their lab.

Hi, thanks for the reply. What I meant was, if you do a phD which has USA collaboration, could you go and work with them afterwards based on the fact that you have a phD based around their research but I gather from what you said that this would be possible.

Under most circumstances there would be a very high chance of obtaining a job in your US collaborators lab after finishing your PhD, and even of spending some time their during your study.

Ask your potential supervisor.
