I passed my MRes this year and last week I was accepted for an MRes/PhD scholarship funded by BBSRC. As i already have my MRes, which I self funded, does anyone know whether i should be reimbursed for my MRes year seen as though this should be a 4 year scholarship, but my PhD will take 3 years? Has anyone else been in this situation? Thanks.

I really don't think they'll pay you back for the MRes year. I'm slightly confused why they gave it to you, should they (or your uni) not have told you to apply for the +3 instead? Or is it a funded project you applied for? If it's a funded project then I think they will just make it a +3, but you should ask your supervisor.

I think it depends whether your MRes was a recognised course in the eyes of the Research Council. Saying this, I was under the impression that Research Councils were reluctant to fund a Masters in the research area of one that's already been taken - even if they require a recognised Masters to be taken.
For that reason you should tread very carefully on this. And they won't reimburse you. Ever.

A friend off my MSc course last year got accepted onto a 1+3 PhD scholarship, eventhough she already had a Masters. Her supervisors have just told her that she'll be funded for 4 years instead of the usual 3, so in effect, her write-up year will be paid (lucky devil)! Don't think this is legitimate though, and if her funding body found out........

Thanks for your replies. Yeah it is a funded project. I just seem to remember someone who I worked with last year saying they got their fees from their MRes course reimbursed when the same thing happened to the. Even if I got the MRes fees back would be a big help seen as though I saved up to pay for them. Il probably try to contact them or ask my supervisor. Thanks again.

You can try! But I really can't see this happening, since presumably the place will have been given taking into account your Masters....
In fact I've never heard of this happening before though I've heard of many people with Masters they self funded....
