What's an MPhil?

G

Hi, I've seen this term used around here, what's the difference between a PhD and an MPhil?

G

They are both research degrees. For both, you are required to produce a thesis and undergo a viva voce examination. The main difference is that for a PhD (Doctor of Philosophy), the research should have a novel aspect whereas this is not required for an Mphil (Master of Philosophy). An Mphil can be completed in 2 years (full time) while a PhD will take 3-4 years.
