So embarrassed - what to do!

D

Last night I went out for a bit of partying (despite feeling yucky with flu but only live once etc). I don't normally drink lots and I got rather erm... inebriated. This morning I remember that when I got back to my friend's house last night I had found some random number in my phone and drunk dialled it, leaving two rather rambling voicemails (my friend said I kept mentioning pi - my party trick is to recite it to 100 decimal places and I also said "I have a PhD!" quite a lot too). No idea whose number it was...

... until started getting flashbacks. I remember talking to a lot of guys and flirting with a lot too but don't remember anyone giving me their number. I remembered giving someone my email address but the pen wouldn't work so I figured it must be him. Oh dear. He must now think I'm a complete fruitcake!

So do I a) ring again and apologise, b) text to say sorry or c) do nothing and hope it fades into obscurity.

I don't know what you should do - all three are reasonable suggestions- just depends on your personality. Personally, I'd send a text. A call would be too horrendous, and, as you don't know exactly who it was, it seems unnecessary to me. I'd probably send the text out of both courtesy and curiosity, but doing nothing would probably work out too.

Doesn't sound all that embarrassing though. I mean, boasting about your PhD and reciting pi to 100 places doesn't really make you cool, but it's not bad for a drunken tale, so don't feel too bad :-)

Hmmm well if it were me and there was little chance of bumping into this guy again I would go with option c - unless you really liked him and want to get in touch again - which I'm assuming isn't the case since you can't entirely recall what happened.

From talking to friends though, I've realised it's worse for people who are rarely so drunk that they aren't really in control than for people who are regularly in this state - I'm thinking of some of my undergrad classmates - apparently nobody really batted an eyelid no matter what they did/said - everyone was just used to it.

As I was reading that I was expecting the end to say "and the number was my supervisor's/boss'" or similar.

I don't think you need to worry - maybe text an apology and leave it at that.

Reciting pi to a 100 decimal places??? I can only recite it to 3. I don't really think you need to do anything or even worry about it. You were drunk and these things happen. Perhaps just send a text apologising if you're feeling really guilty about it.

I used to drink quite a lot as an undergrad and party a lot but I've been fairly quiet the past few years - but all of a sudden the past few months I've gone a bit crazy doing lots of things I wouldn't normally do. I'm really enjoying it - living it up a bit and just relaxing and meeting some great people but it's a bit of a shock to the system when I do something crazy like this!

Sneaks, that made me laugh, that would have been really really bad if it was my boss' number I dialled!

There is a chance I may bump into him again but (from what little I remember) he seems quite normal and sensible and probably just had a good chuckle and that'll be the end of it. I think I'll just leave it for now and go into a corner and hibernate until I stop feeling so embarrassed!

D

funny thing I thought there'd be something about your supervisor's no in there as well!! No harm done - it'll give somebody a good chuckle!! 8-)

lmao.... oh dear!!!! ha ha ha, yeh, I thought it was going to be the sup/boss too - now that would be absolutely excrutiating!!! he he he - I'd either send a text or just let it go, personally though i'd be flipping impressed if someone who was out of their tree could recite pi to 100 decimal places - I can't even remember how it starts :$ lol lol lol - I don't drink much either - last time I threw up in my MIL's flower beds then sat on a hedge on the way home and wanted to go to sleep lol -argghhh!!! I have to see her regularly :-) I'm sure whoever it is is either a) majorly impressed, or b) wetting themselves laughing ;-)

S

I too thought it was the supervisor you had called up in that state!

D

Well I've stopped feeling so bad, seeing as everyone keeps telling me it's not that bad really - I wasn't nasty or rude or anything, just drunk and rambly and a bit weird! I'll just have to avoid Oxford for the foreseeable future in case I bump into him...

I find reciting pi to 100 decimal places a pretty swoon-worthy party trick! heh

You can tell we're all academics as we are all impressed by that party trick ;-):p

There is always the fourth option of pretending someone had take yo rphone and it wasn't you at all.

Chill - on the scheme of embarassing things done when you are drunk it is pretty mild

Pfft! And let someone else take all the credit for his wonderful recital of pi to 100dp?! :p;-)
