Medical PhD program

P

Hi
I am currently studying medicine in Germany and am highly interested in doing basic research after finish med school, in Germany we can work on our MD thesis parallel to our normal studies, so that we get our MD shortly after graduating from med school. I would really like to continue working in research for a while and therefore I was planning to apply for a PhD position in the UK. I realized that most PhD programs for medics require two years of specialist training and an MRCP. Do you know whether there are also options for directly attending a phd program after med school?
Thanks a lot!!

Hi PeterS,

I don't know the answer, but have you tried searching for PhDs and looking at the entry requirements? http://www.findaphd.com/search/phd.aspx?keywords=

Perhaps someone who has had a similar experience will be able to give you a better answer...

I would contact potential supervisors to see what they think. From talking to a medic in my group who's just been offered a PhD position, it looks like some programs may accept you but in order to be competitive it may be better for you to have that specialist training and the MRCP.
