New to this country

I

Hello

Before getting to my question I would like to say hello to everyone. I am new to this forum and to this country. Coming from Germany originally I currently do my Master's degree here in the UK.

It may be unusual but I am planning on staying here in the UK and will try to get a job.

Now what I wonder is:

What are my chances to get a job as a postgrad? Do I have to try to get into one of the grad schemes or is it possible to get a job straight away? I would strongly prefer the latter.

Thank you for your help and support.

Hi Inhalt

Welcome to the UK!

Your question is equivalent to "How long is a piece of string" I'm sorry to say.

It depends on far more factors than you have given in the question.

What masters is it?
What job in particular?
What field?

A grad scheme at a company IS a job you realise?

If you supply some more info then maybe I can give better advice.

All the best

Hey well it's a master in Accounting and Finance.

I simply don't know when to apply for a start in September!!

Hi Inhalt, I see you posted this two months ago. I hope you are well and have found ways to look for a job, or have found a job by now.

Anyway what I'd like to say to you is that you can start by looking around your own university. Some businesses/companies post vacancies to universities. Also, go to the Student Centre in your university where they can advise you on your options on finding work. There should be some pamphlets on career hunting for graduates, start there too. Also, keep an eye open for Job Fairs, because that is when companies are out hunting for people. I'm sure you'll find something!

best wishes,

Hey. Thanks, I'm good, yes.

Well I'm graduation in August so I'll be ready for one in September. Just not sure when to apply...I really would prefer an actual job and not a graduate programme.

Hey. This post may seem a bit odd but I am serious about it. So I'm from Germany originally and would like to stay here after my postgrad degree. Everyone I talk about this seems stunned and is like "WTF? Really?".

So is it "strange" for a German to stay here? If I get a job let's say in southern England, will people be friendly towards me and how easy will it be to make some friends? I always feel that I stick out as a German...

S

:-) no it's not strange for a German to stay here :-)
There're many Italians, French, Portuguese, Americans, Canadians, Australians, Pakistani, Indians, Africans, Thai people here (employed or not), so it shouldn't be any different for Germans!

Don't worry about it. People will love your German accent!!! Enjoy being you!!
(do get employed as well, of course)

Not strange at all. You will tend to find a more diverse mix of nationalities in the big cities than in the small towns though, so bear that in mind.

I suspect it's because you come from a country known for having a strong economy and jobs, but want to start your career in a country with high unemployment among young people including graduates.

I

@bewildered: that could be that reason but I simply don't really like it there but a lot here!
