Hi I also finished my Master's degree and got merit. I am a bit confused about this classification. Do you know what it actually means to employers and how universities regard it when considering PhD candidates?

S

hi john!
congratulations!!! Are you planning to do a phd?

Most employers wouldn't have a clue about MSc classifications. I expect for PhDs it's looked on slightly more favourably than just a pass.

Hello Felicita. I think when you are interviewed by the company, they will consider your masters with merit certification and if you apply PHD you may get some scholarship.. I THINK..

I think you would struggle to get a scholarship in the UK with a merit to be honest, as it is so competitive. I just started my PhD and everyone with a scholarship has a distinction. Although no harm in applying

Depends on the institution and discipline. Many people in my area don't have MScs and those that do don't usually have distinctions.

I don't think employers really understand the pass rates they will just prob see the Masters degree, unless of course you are applying in an education setting then they might know. As for scholarship I think it depends where and to whom you are applying to. If you already know the supervisor and are at the uni you are applying to you can get on with a merit, there are people with scholarships at my uni who applied for phD before knowing their grades and then got merit but still kept the scholarship, although most have distinction It might be harder at the best unis or if you are applying somehwere that doesn;t know of you work. But it's a great chievement non-the-less :)
