Proofreading !!

E

Hello all,

I am not an English native speaker neither my supervisor. Therefore, my supervisor advised me to find someone to proofread my thesis. It is in Human Rights Law. Do you have any advice??

Kind regards

M

I would ask around in my department if I were you. They will be able to advise you for the right people to do this.

E

Thank you marasp, In fact my university is in French (Switzerland) and I'm the only student doing a thesis in English

E

I find someone, but it will cost me a fortune because she takes around 60$ per hour. My thesis is 250 pages.
I'm thinking about publishing my thesis with some famous publisher such as Oxford University Press or Cambridge University Press. Do you know if they are doing the editing. In this case I can find someone cheaper. What do you think?

K

Try here for trained proofreaders with experience in your subject area: http://www.sfep.org.uk/directory/directory.asp. It's a skilled profession and if you want it done properly it can be expensive. You will find plenty of people willing to do it cheaply but I would be wary of skimping on a job where quality is key.

If you manage to get a publisher, they will provide a copy-editor and a proofreader. As far as I'm aware theses that are published usually need to be rewritten to a large extent - the style and format required to pass a PhD is not usually the same style that will sell lots of copies to a wider audience.

Have you approached any publishers? Without wishing to dampen your ambition, is your thesis on a very popular topic that is likely to attract attention and make the publisher lots of money with minimal risk? Bear in mind that publishing also usually takes a long time.

E

Thank you Kelpie for your post. My thesis topic is very important for lawyers and asylum seekers in Europe, so, I think it is likely to attract attention. However, as you said publishing will take long time. Therefore, I will send the thesis to a proofreader.
Cambridgeeditors company gives me offer 3200$, do you think it is ok?

J

Dear Emaa:

Although of course it depends on the total word count of your thesis, $3200 sounds quite high. Did you ask them to edit it in a very short period of time? That can also significantly increase the total amount that a professional editing company will charge you.

I would definitely encourage you to look around a bit more since this is such an important investment in your work. A quick Google search will turn up plenty of potential editing companies. Thus far I have had several good experiences while working on my masters in education with www.admissionsticket.com One upside of their service is that they will provide you with a complimentary sample edit of your writing before you choose to use their service so that you can evaluate whether or not their editing work is up to your standards.

Again, I would encourage you to do some more research online and compare prices of several companies before making such a large investment. Best of luck in your path to publication!

E

Thank you jkansai for your post. I did not ask them to edit it in a short period of time. I check the link you provided me. It is useful, thank you.
