Post Grad applications

R

Hi Everyone,

I am currently in my 3 year of undergrad and have been advised by my personal tutor to apply for a 1+3 ESRC funded PhD, I will be applying to two institutions for the 1+3 but I also wanted to apply for a Masters at one of them as well (just incase I don't get funding as I think I can just about manage to take a personal loan for a 1 year MA) I was wondering if any body had any similar experience especially with regard to when to submit applications (at the same time? MA first? PhD first and wait to see if I get funded, then apply for MA if not...?)
Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Many thanks
Rosie

You are best not to apply for both a MA and PhD at the same institution as this could come across as you are unsure what to do and they will want to make sure that any PhD student they take on will finish the PhD.

If I were you I would apply to several PhDs and wait to see if you get accepted, then if not, you can apply for MAs (or other PhDs). If you are going to self-fund most placed will probably take you anyway, but self funding is hard and I wouldn't recommend that route anyway really.

in this case i would recommend that if you're unsure about your career then you should stop and search. dont puruse your career from the same institution as they will make you get on the Phd for just money. So search out some different institutions for your PHd

Thanks for the advice!

Just to be clear there is no way that I would be able to self fund a PhD but I have considered taking a personal bank loan to fund a 1 year Masters, which is terrifying but hopefully worth it.

I will defiantly take your advice and apply for PhD research first.

Thanks for the tip about different institutions, I have heard that it can be good to get some experience of different universities.
