Advice on opportunities in UK after postdoc

S

Hi,

I've an offer for a postdoctoral position from a top UK university to work on graphene and other 2D electronic materials. I'm from India but did my PhD with research in materials science very recently from US and still in US looking for jobs (no success). Though I'm very interested in taking up the offer but I'm concerned about future opportunities to work in UK. My question is how hard is it for an international researcher with a PhD to get a job in UK after postdoc? Are companies willing to sponsor highly qualified workers? I do have another postdoc offer from a good university in US to work on a less interesting (for me) project on polymers. It would be of great help and highly appreciated if I could get some suggestions as I've to make my decision soon which will decide my future. Thank you.

The job market isn't that different from the US if you are prepared to move around. There's more jobs in the US obviously though because it's much bigger.

I don't think your nationality makes any difference at postdoc level if you are a good competitive researcher.

You can get company sponsored working visas but I don't know how easy this is.

I agree with TreeofLife, just wanted to add I had a friend from the US that had a company sponsored Visa in the UK - the process took a while although she applied over xmas so that could have slowed things down, and it was expensive for her(something like £500). And then when she wanted to change jobs it was difficult as her visa was attached to her particular job. I'm sure these are general visa issues though and it would be very similar in the US
