Hi all,

I need British participants to take part in a short survey about beliefs about social groups in Britain. The survey asks you to answer about how you feel about being British, and your beliefs about being British. It will then ask some further questions about other social groups- ones that you may or may not belong to. You also need to read a short newspaper article from a leading British newspaper in which you will be asked some basic memory based questions. Takes about 15 minutes to complete (note- I have heard the software doesn't work very well in IE, so would recommend using Firefox/Chrome :) )

Will be happy to answer any questions, as well as report back with findings once data collection is completed if that interests some of you.

Done, I found it a bit confusing at first on the 'fuzzy' section about British people though. I understood it when I came on to the questions again about other groups of people

Tried to complete it but couldn't see any colours in the second section unfortunately.

Also I wondered about the sampling. By requesting British participants, you might exclude those who identify as Scottish, Welsh or English, whose responses might be of interest to your study.

Yeah I agree to be honest. I identify as English way more than British, but I just used British as if it was synonym for English. I don't know if that's the right thing to do or not.

Honestly I couldn't easily understand Beliefs about being British section, so I stopped midway.

I'm afraid it completely lost me once it started taking about boundaries and fuzziness, so couldn't finish it.

I got to the point of reading the fairly long article and then the survey crashed and wouldn't let me continue, which was frustrating. I would have been interested to see how it finished - I was asked to compare being British (obviously a national identity) with being Muslim (religious identity) and I'm honestly not sure what conclusions you could draw from that sort of comparison, as a religion by its very nature means that the people who follow that religion have certain things in common.

It had a slightly Poirotesque dénouement ;)

I'm sorry some of you found the belief questions slightly confusing- those questions basically tell you a statement and you have to decide where you feel Britain as a social group belongs within that statement (e.g. is group membership 'clear-cut' or is it 'fuzzy'). This is not the first place that has provided similar feedback so i've noted it for future studies

Identifying more with being English/Scottish than British is indeed an interesting concept and again is something I have heard quite often. It's hard to conceptualise every nuance such as that in simple quantitative measures however.

Done! As some others have mentioned, I found the phrasing of the questions in the first section confusing. The second part is much more straightforward :) Good luck with the research.

If you are hearing it quite often I think you should listen. It is not so much an interesting concept or a nuance as fundamental to how you define Britishness. IMO the issue needs tackling head-on and shouldn't be dismissed as "too hard", especially at PhD level.

Saying this for your own benefit - presumably you don't want to antagonise your examiners.
