Resigned from PhD now want to finish!

T

Hello. Resigned from PhD last year. Terrible regret now. Half of thesis written. Can I finish somewhere else? My supervisors want me to finish, anyhow, anywhere. Think I only need one year. Thanks

Can you not reregister at your old uni then? What was the PhD in? I think it's very difficult to reenter for submission elsewhere.

Yes; the institution t doesn't just let you 'do' the PhD with them- it trains you HOW to do it. And it is very difficult to persuade them to let you take their knowledge elsewhere. Unless they were arguably responsible for you leaving in the first place of coutse, and then you could claim a beakdown of relations. But you don't mention that so I guess it's not relevant.

You're best bet would be to try re-registering at your original University and with your supervisors' support, you should be able to.

However, given that you have completely withdrawn it is very doubtful if any outstanding funding due to you before you quit would once again become available. You may have to finance any remaining period from your own pocket. That is unless your supervisors have made arrangements to cover at least the fees of any remaining study.

The only instance I know of where someone has re-registered on their original PhD after quitting is Brian May of Queen fame. However, money would not be an issue with him. :-)

Going by the characters who get honararies, he probably could have got it for nothing!!!

Many thanks for your advice. I spoke to a different university in the UK that knows my professional work well and wants me to study for a PhD BUT from scratch. I'll enquire at the uni I left...
