Interview dress code

B

I have an interview next week and i have no idea what i'm expected to show up in. A suit, business casual or all the way student casual a.k.a torn jeans and smelly nike trainers? [joke]

I know i have to look and feel both smart and comfortable - and probably not come across as 'desperate'. Or is desperate a good thing? Hints? Anyone?

A

Nothing wrong with wanting to make a good impression and showing that you are serious about the studentship. I'd recommend the suit option but search the archives on here for plenty of other opinions. Good luck!

S

On the build up to the world cup, i recommend an England shirt and a can of beer (or several?)

B

Thanks for the replies guys - i didn't realise there was another thread on this already!

@ ann - yeah, the general consensus seem to be suit. guess im gonna have to buy my first one. My MSc studentship was so easy - just an email with my CV and a 5 minutes phone interview and offer, so i've never been to an academic interview in my life.

@ stu: hmmm - now that you mention it, one condition though - can i have your title when you're done?

S

What title?

S

You forgot the union jack shorts. They'll go down a storm.

B

'DR.'

S

I won't be finished with that, so no deal.

B

Hehe - union jack shorts - let's hope the guy has a sense of humour.

I just got a conditional offer from Exeter - on recieving my 2nd reference letter. The person writing it is busy though, so i might have to ask someone else to chip in last minute (deadline next week).

Got my suit too - so preparing for my interview next week. Hopefully it'll go well - and then i'd have to decide where. Exeter or Staffordshire.
