I got an offer at Staffordshire starting August 7th, with a very generous studentship of 12,000 - so i've been so happy. We only ever corresponded via email, but i got a written confirmation through the post today. In it it says the 12,000 will cover both my tuition and living expenses. I'm guessing a phd tuition fee will be about 10,000 a year or there abouts - so i might need a job to eat and pay the rent? What does the EPSRC cover exactly?

If you are a UK or EU (or EEA student) then your fees will be normally around £3,500 a year (some subjects have bench fees as well). An international student would pay more in fees (but £10,000 a year does sound very high!). If it were say £3,500, the £12,000 would be tax free so you would have £8,500 to live on: nor rich by any means, but enough to live a modest living. You might be able to supplement it by teaching or by part time work, but most funding comes with a limit to how much paid work you can take on.

thanks chrisrolinski, i am sooo very relieved now! i am a UK citizen, so that means i can go along with my flat hunting. I lived on a 3,800 studentship for my MSc, so this should be more than enough.

Hehe, thanks DanB for the replies. Yeah, money, meoney money! I go in sometime next week to view the facilities and talk about what ill be doing in more detail - i'll see if they'd let me teach or do anything else there to supplement.
