Is it common to pay for binding and printing yourself or does the lab normally pay?

Hi everyone,

I was having a discussion with some friends last night and we were talking about who pays for the binding and printing of the PhD thesis for the viva. A friend of mine was horrified that I paid the £100 or so myself and that my supervisor did not put it on the grant for me. I thought it was the student who normally paid even in the lab setting as the grants are meant for experiments.

Did you pay for the thesis or was it put on a grant code? I am curious to know.

My copies for examiner were printed from my college account and I paid the binding, it was like ten euro. When it came to hard copies, in the college I was in, the student pays. It is also customary to offer hardback to your supervisors. Four supervisors, 5 copies (1 is required for the colleges' library, and muct be given to graduate) of the thesis, set be back just let than 400 euro. Expensive, but I was told of this in my first year so I had put money aside.

I had to pay for the 3x copies for my examiners but I didn't mind paying until I found out other supervisors covered their students ones. I guess it depends on the lab and if they have grant money left. My supervisors will only get a hard copy if they ask for it as we don't have to submit any hard copies post viva for which I am grateful;.

The costs indicated above are horrendous.
I used the university printer for the viva copies. If I remember, there were 3 of these but it was £15 in total.
For the final hardback I used an external printer and got two copies. The cost was less than £25 per copy. I got one for me and one for the uni. My supervisor asked me to get him one but changed his mind when I said "No problem, I will get a costing for you". These guys earn upwards of £40k or £50k. They have a bloody cheek expecting a broke student to pay for their copy.

I paid £100 quid for my copies pre-viva and the postage to send them and when I submit my corrections I will have to submit another 3 copies so it'll be another £100 quid plus postage.

In our department, we all had to pay for our Thesis printing and binding.

Wow, I think I got off lightly then. Our uni paid for the postage and as we only resubmit an electronic copy.

100 is a bit steep. I paid about 65-70 for 3 copies, also an official copy was submitted electronically.

I think ours is so steep because we have to get all the copies soft bound with blue cover and gold letters...

I paid about 70 quid I think for three soft backs. Some of my peers had supervisors who paid for them out of their funding. By that point, I was beyond caring!

I imagine after the long hard road, it won't bother too much to pay this :)
