Hi Everyone, I applied for a PhD recently and have just been told I've got an interview. It is for a Psychology PhD where the research title and proposal are already given and funding is agreed for the successful candidate. What I wanted to know is how many people do they usually interview for this type of thing, will it be about the same as for a graduate job (i.e. 4-6 intereviewees)?

can't give a difinite answer but i have had a few phd interviews, and the number of interviewees ranged from 3-5. However I have had a couple of interviews where i havn't got a clue how many and they could have been much more.

With me [and thats just me] I went to 4 interviews and there never more than three other bods. For what its worth.

For mine there were 6 of us, for 2 studentships.

For my PhD there were 8 of us for one studentship

For my studentship, there were 5 other applicants

For mine, there were 8 shortlisted for 2 places. They couldn't interview everyone as there were too many applications. I applied to a couple of other Universities around the same time, one did the shortlisting on the phone, then invited shortlisted candidates for an interview (don't know how many).

First of all Congrads on getting shortlisted, it means they are interested in you and are a good fit for the project on paper. This topic just came up in my department, apparently it is normal to have about 3-6 who they have shortlisted here. Lots of variations with one guy interviewing everyone who applied (15ish)!
