It's not what you know.................

G

Without wishing to whinge, does it seem to anyone else that 'who you know' is more important than 'what you know' in the search for a PhD?

I've got a good degree and masses of relevant research experience, but still haven't got even an interview...?

Maybe I need to offer 'payment in kind' to various heads of department......?!

G

of course it is but they have to spend their word for you

I quite agree with that statement. I had a bitter experience with doing a PhD which has lead me into an abortion of the program because of iadequate supervision. I think if one is to emback on a PhD one has to have all clearification with regards to funding and supervisory arrangements.

Definitely the case I struggled for ages to get a position and in the end I got one for someone who was an old friend of my bosses. But I also found that most positions go to students already at that institution

Don't worry, you're not alone! I've applied and applied and applied and now I've just stopped. With good marks and a years experience, I feel like I've wasted four years work, and the constant worry is driving me mad. Does anyone out there have any advice on this - is it, or was it, this hard for everyone else?

G

I finished my degree then worked for a year as a research technician. The experience of working within a university was very appealing to most potential supervisers and i subsequently got a Phd!
