Well, I think we all have a plan b even if it's not that concrete:)I was looking for other funding and then stopped because I thought it's bad luck...well external locus of control here:)
I thought of emailing my supervisor but then I thought I push my luck:)lol. It's a crazy circle in our minds...isn't it?
The thing is that succesful applicants' registries will know by today.

Thanks Sarab. I honestly wish you all the luck in the world. I need the funding desperately but I don't feel in competition. I wouldn't like other people to be disappointed. We are all on the same boat. The best of luck...

i wonder if they will inform by e-mail or by snail-mail? i jump every time my mailclient goes "ding-dong" announcing a new e-mail...

ESRC selectors are snobbish. They favour students with degrees from Oxbridge. I know someone with a 2:1 in an irrelevant subject to her PhD area, but got full ESRC funding easily. For us, things are so difficult even if we've got firsts/distinctions from less famed unis... References are very important as well.

It's not only those students that get funding from the ESRC though. I thought the same until I met quite a few people that got it from other more 'humble' universities. It's not only also the classification of your degree. I think what it's more important to them it's the proposal.

Yes, Evaki, I agree to some extent. But the Oxford chap's topic was on media consumption and stardom in Hong Kong, do you think it is an 'attractive' topic to the ESRC, as much as the ones on poverty, social democracy and justice? I think might be his degrees from Oxford...Anyway, good luck to you all. It is sometimes a matter of luck.

I can see what you are saying here, and I agree. However, I am not entirely sure that the interests of ESRC revolve exclusively around social issues. My dissertation supervisor had an ESRC funding and was studying face recognition...My proposal is in psycholinguistics, and nobody told me that these are topics that are not ESRC attractive. Anyway...good luck to you too.

Another day... This is horrible...

I've just been on the phone to my university - they have not received anything from the ESRC yet! Postal strikes maybe? They were also under the impression that I would be contacted directly by the ESRC with the outcome of my application, but I don't think that's the case this year. Anyone heard anything yet?
