'Borderline' MA result

J

Hi, I've worked out my average for my MA is 69.87. My tutor has asked that the Board of Examiner's look to see whether a Distinction can be awarded as a borderline case. I certainly feel that I deserve one (who doesn't hey?!) and my final dissertation was handed in two days before I gave birth to my second baby. (I studied day release whilst working full time and through both my two pregnancies) I know everybody faces challenges whilst studying; many more so than mine, so I'm guessing external cirumstances are not really taken into account. My tutor will not comment on what he thinks the examiners will do so I'm feeling very impatient :-) Does anybody have any similar experiences in terms of the borderline issue? If so, should I be hopeful or not? I was also offered a PhD place on the basis of my marks and references etc but decided not to do it (can't afford it!) Are there any appeal procedures if I am awarded a merit? Thanks in advance. (In the end I'll settle for what I get tbh, its just the not knowing that it killing me lol)

Julia,

I think your chances of getting a distincton are high. The grades for my MA averaged out at 59.8% and I was awarded a Merit without having to do anything - no appeals, or asking for other circumstances to be taken into account etc. The transcript of my results just says that I averaged 60% and was awarded an MA with Merit

I've heard people say that if you are within one per cent of the next grade you are automatically moved up into the next category without question, so I think this will happen with you.

I don't know: I got 69.3% on mine so I was .7 away from a distinction! They didn't round me up and I never thought to appeal: damn that 0.7%

O

what happened? did they give you a distinction?

J

Thanks for your replies. I've still not heard. Tutor says Examiners are considering it still

J
