I have just completed my second year at university in the UK, and intend to study for a PhD. I have been given mixed signals as to whether i should try and go straight into the PhD or get a master's first. i am likely to get a 1st or a high 2:1. How much of a chance do i stand straight from a BA?

In general a UK student wishing to do a PhD in the sciences or engineering should be able to start a PhD with a 2(i) and no further Masters qualification. In the arts and humanities it is more common to do a Masters degree first.

These things tend to be very subject specific, as the level of funding available determines how difficult it is to get hold of. Ask your current tutors what they would recommend and then post what you find out here - don't forget to mention what your subject area is.

Just got a 2?1 in sports sciences, so in theory I should be able to start a relevant Phd; only downside is that I can't find any relevant studentships out there.

It is now getting late for applying for PhDs as most will have already been filled. Look atvthe web sites of the departments you are interested in. Write to the people doing the most interesting work and see if they'd be willing to consider you for anything starting in 2005. You can also take the opportunity to see if anyone will take you one for some research experience whilst you're waiting to start.
