I thought a Masters was the equivalent of a french DESS, and the DEA was actually the (3 years) doctorate? Could you clarifiy?

For Al: Well in fact the DEA (dipl├┤me d'├ętudes approfondies) is the equivalent to the masters and a little bit more. The Masters is done in 2 years but the DEA in 1 year. then comes the Ph.D or Doctorat or thesis for 3 years.

Thank yuo Rodolphe for this help, so what is the difference with the french DESS, i've heard its similar to the DEA but for other areas of studies than research, more oriented to work?

DESS is orientated 2 work it's more practical than theorical. it takes 1 year as the DEA but u cannot prepare a Ph.D after a DESS unless exceptions. DEA is only orientated 4 research, teaching...
Masters does correspond 2 the french maitrise but it's hard 2 be accepted in the french system if u have a masters and the opposit is true. So all u have 2 write is that u've done a masters and they know well what does it mean. it's not at all above the DEA, french and american systems r different.
