Liverpool is a good uni, so I don't what the problem is. I advice you should always go for the uni with the project which interest you the most, unless you feel the uni is so bad you're worried it'll affect the integrity of the PhD and if that's the case you shouldn't apply.
Historybluff you can spend the rest of your life learning new skills, you're aren't going to acquire knowledge on a level above that of your first Mres, so that's no point doing another. Personally, and this isn't an attack on you, I view people who take degree just for the hell of it afaird of going into the world of work and this may be the view of employers. So it might easier to get onto a PhD now than after anther Mres.
I had suffered from depression for years, thoughout my BSc, a studentship and MSc, all included a lot of lab work, which I like so that's fine by me. The OP haven't mentioned they don't like lab work or any other aspect of their PhD. Could be wrong but it sounds like the PhDs you and Smilodon were doing weren't suited for you anyway, and there's nothing from the OP's post to suggest the case is the same for them.
