Dissertation structure - stuck!
H

I think you've got a perfect structure too. You've got there studies, each leading to the next!

Quote From chickpea:

I've allocated 15000 words to my 'big' chapter, but it may go over and I may even look at whether it's more sensible to split it over two chapters. How big is the one you're working on?

Two of my chapters are 15,000 words, and I have considered splitting it up but how? The introduction and methods aren't enough words to constitute a seperate chapter, and I don't want to split the results and discussion.

Possible fall out with superviso
H

If you got touch with him on Thursday, you can't expect him to respond by Monday even if it is urgent and you put that in your email heading.

If he doesn't respond by end of play tomorrow, phone him up or send another email. I would strongly advise you not to damage your relationship, especially at this very final stage. You need him at your side.

Myoldmonkey and chickpea, thank you! It's reassuring that others relate to my experience and feelings. I think it's a mixture of this had gone on too long, this is making me feel dumb, and what is the point of all this? BUT as chickpea said, onwards and upwards, let's get this thing finished! :)

This week for me is writing up literature review. I've got a lot of reading to do too, so I'm kind of doing it in tandem. I'm also expecting feedback back from supervisor on Friday and I'm dreading it. I know it's going to need revisions, but I just hope it doesn't bruise my self-confidence.

What are you all up to this week?

I like the summary approach too! I might try it.

I'm also aiming for Oct for 1st draft.

I've reached the stage where I'm fed up with the PhD and I can't believe I am saying this, but I feel like giving it up. I know I won't and I seriously can't, but I just can't wait for it to all be over, and I can move on with my life.

Anyone here doing a PhD who is not going into academia?
H

As much as I would like to stay in academia, I think practically its just not going to work me. I don't want the insecurity of a short term contract, and the immense pressure to publish.

So although I probably will apply for research posts post-PhD, realistically I will probably end up doing something else. Some how I feel I will probably stay in academia, but not in a research/lectureship posts, maybe in admin.

What do you plan to do?

Post PhD life
H

I think I'm in the same position as chickpea. I'm also not looking for anything until I have submitted, as I know I'll probably get distracted.

What are your worst fears about your PhD?
H

Quote From chickpea:
Another fear I have is that my supervisors' feedback is out of line with the examiners' opinions, and that what my supervisors think is a finished thesis is judged to be anything but! My supervisors are relentlessly positive and enthusiastic, which is lovely, but I keep thinking all it takes is a nitpicky examiner and I'll come unstuck!

This is probably my greatest fear. Supervisors think it's close to perfect, and examiners think it's rubbish. Sigh.

Sarah, it did work :)

Chickpea and Zutterly, thanks. I have objectives clearly written up but that research question is the difficult one. I think I might wait till 1st drat is written up.

Hi, have you all decided on your PhD title and main research question? I have the research question I think but I'm struggling with the title, any advice? Thanks :)

What are your worst fears about your PhD?
H

Quote From Zutterfly:
Like many others have mentioned here, being told that my thesis is not of PhD standard in viva, or them opening with 'we have serious concerns about your thesis' in viva.

I recently have had some funny viva dreams which I shall disclose here for giggles. I had one where it was over really quickly and I passed with minor corrections. Then, I woke up (in my dream) disappointed that I had not passed my viva. Then I had the 'real' dream viva where I had 11 examiners and they were all getting drunk on wine and passed me because they were really drunk. Then on my way out of my department the building began to collapse. I then woke up thinking 'I have just been through my viva twice, I can't be bothered doing it again!' haha

Hahahaha! Loved those, I haven't had any yet (thankfully I think) ;-)

Supervisor changing my work without telling me
H

Quote From Mct2016:
Hi, I could really do with some advice please. My supervisor is a micromanager. I haven't been doing my PhD long so I've ignored it. I sent some work to her yesterday and she returned it with a couple of comments. Fair enough. But as I began revising I noticed that not only had she changed my paragraph structure - she had rewritten chunks of it without telling me. What do I do? She has form for this. Another PhD student complained about the supervisor disrespecting their work and he was kicked out.

All I can say is you are very fortunate that your supervisor is re-writing sentences for you! My supervisor barely checks my work, forget editing!

Quote From Drmumphd:
Hello. Great post topic! I would say I have 2 fears: 1) failing 2) that all the hard work will leave me no better off (employment wise) than I started.

Sadly, I think the latter will hold for me if I plan to go outside of academia. I can't see me being in a better position for employment after I was after masters/undergrad.

Is it your 1st baby Britt? I can't imagine any babies playing together whilst the parents write, until they are about 3 years old, they don't normally let you do anything whilst you attempt to even send an email!
