The One Goal Thread

Woo! Three goals achieved already today! Now maybe I'll get some work done.

The One Goal Thread
S

I'm going to pretend that I set myself goals for today and then congratulate myself for achieving them.

Goal 1: Get up at 8.
Goal 2: Have free breakfast.
Goal 3: Walk the three miles to work.

the film review thread

Quote From walminskipeasucker:

I watched/was made to watch Pretty Woman Today. I actually really enjoyed it and the ending made me go...awwww. I think it deserves a review on this thread, in fact.

This could be because I was just proofing a feminist essay, or it could be that I just like giving the same bits of advice over and over again (like my Dad with jokes), but, I have to say, Man up. There's t' footbal' on t' telly and you go watching Pretty Woman!? You need to put your foot down lad; tell 'er to stick a (mince) in the oven and that you'll be up in a 105 minutes for a bit of 'ow's your father.

I may have spent too much time in Yorkshire.

Rising Fees
S

Quote From stressed:

I'm not entirely sure how it would work but when they last raised fees and introduced the top up business I was doing my UG degree - those of us who had already started were not charged any more - in our case the price you pay at the start was the price you paid throughout, however new students starting after the changes were charged the higher rate. I think from what happened then, that if they do raise fees (which seems inevitable the way things are going :-() that it won't affect those of us who are already midway through. I could be wrong, but its not the way they've done it before.

I had the same experience. I don't think that they could get away with increasing fees majorly for current students as their decision to commit themselves to a University for 3/4 years will have partially been based on the cost. Putting the total price of the degree up to 17k from 9k when you're one year in would probably lead to a lot of lawsuits.

Good Presentation
S

I did this too today! Actually, I did just carefully read through your posts to check we weren't actually in the same conference. Mine went alright. I think it had the most interesting material in it (if I do say so myself), although it wasn't necessarily the best presented. I'm just looking over a list of issues to work on that my sups sent me. I think the major one is that you can't cover everything in a presentation, so just make a clear well-argued viewpoint your focus.

Where do I go from here - RA/PhD?
S

My advice is to apply for everything, see what responses you get and then decide from there. It's not worth closing off options without seeing what's available. Just giving things a punt and see what turns up. (up)

OMG! I wrote 5,000 words today....
S

Pfft, writing "goals". :p

A far bigger achievement is that I scored 4 goals yesterday. It takes my season total to 5. Okay, three of them were defensive errors and one was smashed from three yards, but still.

Anyhow, enough of my nonsense, I would honestly take a day off after writing 5,000 words in one day. That's like....a thesis done in 12-20 days!

A Very Serious Plumbing Problem - [Men Only]
S

I think most men would enjoy going to the doctor, if only to be told that everything is fine apart from that sports injury that you got many years ago, which nothing can now be done about.

This gives me the idea for a new poster campaign - "Man up, go to the doctor" and "Daddy, I thought real men go to the doctor". Hmmm, may try and sell that to the NHS. The good thing is when I fail at least I can blame cutbacks (it's like I blame being unemployed in 2008 on the world financial crisis - world structural problems absolve the individual of any responsibility.)

Malinowski, Foreshadowed Problems

Not far down. Like 2/3 pages.

how to make stats look pretty?
S

Eurgh, stats. They look prettiest when thrown in the bin and lit on fire.

At a guess, what you currently have is a number of multivariate star graphs on the same axis? Could you not just show each one individually?

I apologise if this is useless. Please feel free to only consider the first part of my response.

I'm confused. Is anyone else pulling it up as a book on google scholar? http://books.google.co.uk/books?hl=en&lr=&id=5mrkoiZAXX4C&oi=fnd&pg=PA135&dq=Programmed+cell+death+in+plant+embryogenesis.+by+Bozhkov+PV,+Filonova+LH,+Suarez+MF.+Current+Topics+in+Developmental+Biology+&ots=zBDBsvjuQj&sig=EIXvdligcCF_6lkF4T51wI0V9yg#v=onepage&q&f=false

From all the forumites, I bid thee welcome.

In honour of your joining us, I offer you this (sprout).

I hope you will not be offended by the paucity of the material gifts of welcome we can offer you. Alas, while our intellectual gifts are massive, our material means are limited.

Need to sell a service, get some money, pay the rent etc. wait!! Did you miss something? Yes you did. You forgot to check where you're advertising. Damn ....all your effort is wasted. Wondering why? Because this a postgraduate forum - everyone has already written a dissertation; two, in some cases!

SAS
S

You mean Super Army Soldiers?

I've talked to actual SAS people, they've told me what it stands for.

Accomodation
S

I'm a subwarden in undergraduate halls because, well, I'm poor and need the cheap rent. Thinking about moving to subwardening in postgrad halls in my final year though. It's not bad, free food, no bills and a decent lot of other subwardens to talk to...although we do tend to be a strange lot.
