Nerdy is good... thanks for the advice. I've actually been going over stats ready for when I do my analysis. And I'm looking at different coding schemes today. Finalising and publishing the literature review is interesting. Do you think everyone's literature review is potentially publishable? Mine is taking bits from here there and everywhere and I'm not sure where it would fit in terms of a journal. I'll talk to my supervisor.

Data storage and syncing data - tips needed

Hey again, I've been using Google Drive for a few days and finding it pretty cool for what I want it for... except my PC doesn't seem to search the Google Drive folder for files... even though I've made sure it is indexed etc, which is a complete bummer!
Is anyone using Google Drive and able to successfully search for files on it through the search bar in the start menu or through Windows Explorer???
Cheers!

Hi 323cjm. Thanks for posting. Glad it's not just me who is bored. Maybe we should just use the opportunity to go for a short holiday or something, while we've got the chance!

Re age - I'm 29 and have just started... some of my colleagues are 35 plus and have just started theirs. No big deal in my department.

I left an incredibly boring job to study and so I've no regrets (but also no family ties or financial issues to reason about).

Good luck with your decision!

Yeh, I've been sorting out my data storage stuff and generally making sure I'm organised. Thing is, I like to have something I can get my teeth into. But OK, I'll take a chill pill and not ask for any work...

OK then I think on that basis it would be perfectly reasonable and perhaps even expected to ask for some direction with regards to reading. I agree with TreeofLife. Even though it is independent study, I don't think that would constitute asking for too much support. Even at PhD level supervisors may recommend specific reading. Of course all supervisors are different. Just be honest and also show that you have looked into it yourself and come up with some potential developments to your lit review. Good luck.

Hello sc648, Did you get feedback on your interim report?

Hi all
I almost feel a bit ashamed writing this... but I figured confession is good, and others might have suggestions. I am 6 months in, data collection is being held up by ethics/waiting for approval, there is a continuation report I could be getting on with (but not a lot new to think about since I've no data yet) and also a presentation to give in a month or so on what I've been doing (but not a lot new to think about since I've no data yet)... So I feel b-o-r-e-d and slightly pee-ed off. Like maybe I am not making the most of my PhD? My student colleagues are all busy... should I ask my sups for some data to analyse or something to do? Any advice / tips appreciated (from seasoned or slightly seasoned PhD students please)...

The search part is very important to me. I know exactly where to go but like to save time clicking through folders. I'm now testing out Google Drive! Cheers both.

Data storage and syncing data - tips needed

Hi all

I have 3 devices which I regularly work from... a PC at uni and two laptops (one at home, one on the go - I know - kind of defeats the object of having a laptop). I currently store my data on several external harddrives/memory sticks. But this has limitations - for example, when you run a search it does not search for the files that are on an external drive (or if it does, it does so very slowly).
Does anyone have any tips on how to be able to access the same data on multiple devices quickly and efficiently? I've thought of using online storage such as Dropbox, but I don't think it is as accessible in terms of searching through folders etc in the same way you would if you were accessing files directly from your PC documents? Does anyone sync data across their multiple devices? Any advice appreciated.
