I am using a Reference Manager, however for some I do not have the shortened title. So most of my references are OK (have the journal abbreviation), but when I compiled my bibliography, I have a couple which did not come abbreviated automatically, and I do not have others in the bibliography which are abbreviated, so I would need to find the abbreviated title and include it manually into the reference manager.

I need to do the journal abbreviations in the reference list for a journal paper I am preparing. Where can I find the list? They suggest http://www.nlm.nih.gov/tsd/serials/lji.html, but I can't understand where to go

Hi I had applied for about 5, but sent emails requesting further information to many more, would say about 10. I actually got the position from one of those I did not actually apply for but emailed asking for further information and attached my CV. I did not hear anything from them, and then heard about an interview. I understand about pissing off your referees.

I do not know what area you are in, but in Science Direct you can put in a topic alert and in Web of Science there is something similar (Saved searches) and also a citation alert...I have a couple for some literature reviews/key papers in the area, which most people will cite whenever they write in my topic.

Could you perhaps phrase it by asking: Prof X, I know you are applying for various grants. However I would like to ask whether you have received any confirmation from the granting bodies, because if not I would need to consider other options as a backup. Would you be willing to act as a referee? Or something similar. Good luck!

Definitely go with it. I had 2 jobs offered to me where I did not get the original job I applied for, and then got a second job after saying they were pleased with my CV. In one situation with the email saying I did not get the post, they requested a telephone interview the next week, and during the telephone interview they offered me a similar job. In the other case around 6 months had passed for the other job to come up. There is nothing to lose :) Good luck

WOW 7 papers keenbean? Congratulations. I am writing my first paper and having 3 papers from my thesis was the most I was looking at. Re the thesis by publication? How common is this, and where is it most common? I am interested in perhaps doing a similar thesis format (I think it would suit my project more to have various short standalone papers which are brought together, as otherwise it would be a huge piece of work)

I am in the first year of my PhD, and I have just received the first comments on a submitted draft of my literature review from my supervisors. Today they told me to start thinking of which journals I would like to publish in. I have no idea. Would have thought that they would suggest the journal. How would you go about selecting a journal?

Hi. To Awen...just a comment. Re your colleague who never seems to have any problems, it may be that she really has problems, but tries to brush them aside to keep herself positive. I sometimes feel like her. I need to keep myself optimistic and certain with what I am saying, because if I start doubting myself openly I will just break down. It is not that I don't have doubts (I have plenty, and broken down crying and who knows what else), but most people in my lab will probably think I have no problems and am certain of all that I am doing. But I certainly am not. It might just be her coping mechanism. So do not dishearten (up)

Hi. I have given my supervisors a draft of my literature review. Now I have just started receiving the comments. I have 4 supervisors I had to send it to, and a post-doc too i.e. 5 people. Would you wait until you received all comments, or work on them as they are received (I am pretty sure I will have conflicting advice etc etc)...had no option but to send it to all of them together as that is how they wanted (already sent an earlier draft to only 1 supervisor, and she gave me comments and now they all wanted it together). She is organising focus groups as part of her PhD studies in order to gauge the opinion on the fitness for purpose of colour photographs as the images degrade with time. Hey. First of all Congrats. In my opinion I see nothing wrong in this. I would have had serious reservations if you were still teaching her or you are at very different positions in life (e.g. she is an undergraduate and you are a professor or something much higher up the scale than she is...I see nothing wrong with PG-UG even). But this is now 6 months later and there is only 2 years between you so things happen. You should be happy you found someone who can support you. Your status now is that you are both PG students, going round in the same circles. So something like this could happen and I do not think anyone will think you are doing anything wrong (I doubt that anyone else will remember you tutored her, except people in the tutor group). Your happiness is most important :) (up) and wish you lots of love :)
