hand sanitisers will not kill flu, like hypothesis said, its a virus! can protect against secondary bacterial infection though, but its really just a form action so gov don't look like they not doing anything - as usual media boom!

We just have to hope pesky students don't start drinkin it like those dorset inmates - cheap jello shots when dosh running low?! ;-)

our uni not too bad, sent a few emails round to warn people to stay off if ill, had few people getting it but nobody has started running around screaming yet!

Hello all! hope you're all doing well this week!?

UPDATE: I got the job at local science centre, as a primary education officer. after much thought and one way discussion (everyone listened but told me for once in my life I had to stick to my guns and make a clear decision all by myself!!! not easy for me!) I decided to accept the post! It is full time and permanent, money is not great as it is charity run, however there is a great team and lots of fun and variety! I decided that I was really starting to stress about money and although this isnt great, its secure and brings in about what I do now. I start week on monday, and am just working 3days until my lecturing is over and then go full time! (they've been really great about that!).
Anyway, most people are really chuffed for me and understanding of the need for a job, and more importantly its something I love and i think i'm quite good at! but my sup is being really funny about it! my dad and partner are just worried its going to take away from getting my PhD done, but i'm determined with that! however, I think sup is just a bit funny cos its out of academia, and I think he thought i'd stay in research! I've said, I just really enjoy this, and he's really ok with that, wants me to do something i'll be happy in, but on other hand says that once i have my PhD there's no way I could stay in this job!

I know in a way where he's coming from - but the job is good and worthwhile and fun, the only downside is the pay, but thats due to charity funding. To be honest for me, as long as I can pay my bills and eat food i'm quite happy, we've never expected to be rich, just want comfort and security. But is it so bad to do my PhD and then side track to something else you feel you're better at and could hopefully make a career out of, even if you have to go back down to the bottom a bit!?

I don't know what any of you can say really, its just that my boss has put a dampner on my excitement of the day!!! :(

oh well, better get a rocket up my a*se as now I have two jobs and a thesis to write! (a cold and insomnia to boot!! :( )

but this probably means i won't be able to get on the midnight train so much :( was really looking forward to some productive silent nights too!!

cheers folks!

Welcome back Sheena and congrats on finishing editing your chapter! It feels like such an achievement doesn't it!? I can't imagine what it feels like when you finish final drafts of last one!

I'm in the lab again, determined to do these experiments this week and be done! not too ill just stuffed up but got sudafed and strepsils! :)

Going to go through chapter 2 today and look at patterns in results for discussion - hopefully be able to put a done there by tonight...!

Dave does come out with some hilarious lines! :) maybe one day eh...!

Well, i am coming down with yet another cold! can hardly breath, headachey, cold and totally bunged up! been in lab today and in for rest of week and really have to be to get these experiments done as relying on other lab and people have taken time out to help me!
Came home to get stuck into my second chapter, read through what I have so far and made a few edits of glaringly obvious stuff, but now need to get on with discussion and my brain is mush! :(

Just don't know how to get started and how i'm going to write discussions for 4 chapters that have totally rubbish results!

oh well, must soldier on, just want to do a little and then can go to bed! Good luck to anyone out there tonight
:p

feel like ****, and can't seem to get any work done

heehee, you sound just like me, i have done "fantasy Come Dine with Me" too! :) defo never skimp and do something not too mental, timing etc! I never get the folks who use a recipe they've never tried before either!!! how silly! I would probably get a few friends over and do a test run, make sure had it all timed etc, but cook for my mates quite a bit anyway - or used to until last 2 years! and they always love my food so i have considered it - but like you, just the whole tv thing that puts me off! I always wonder, what kind of folks what go onto this programme, but for £1000 and if you didnt make a fool of yourself!?! never know what kind of crazies you'd have to invite into your home though....! :) maybe one day!

heehee, i love Xfactor too, TV is ace for just staring out and relaxing the brain! do not feel amoral, we all need these things to chill out with! I just like watching them make food and also thinking - i could totally do with 1000£ and maybe I should participate! don't know what kind of person that makes me....! :)

Thanks Bilbo, I know I do need time off, I just feel I had friday afternoon and all day saturday and I really should have done work today as in lab all week and then following week will be lesson planning for my first lecturing!! :(

So sorry to hear you've been ill this weekend, glad you're better now though.

I hope your meeting goes well with supervisor! I think i'm going to be having an interesting week! hopefully get some nice results for 4th chapter, and going to try and write in evenings towards finishing discussion in 2nd one. But also find out about a job i went for interview for, have no idea whether i'm in with chance but its going to be a kind of life changing decision to make if offered it so trying to think about what i want to do! Don't want to leave them hanging and say, can you give me day or two to think about it!!

Too many things to think about and do and therefore should be getting on with it but instead just want to sit and stare at a blank wall!! :-s

anyway, thanks for nice message and get a good sleep tonight!

Well, how pathetic have I been this weekend - VERY!!! managed to get final draft of intro to supervisor on friday before driving to manchester for gig - which was fab! then came back up road yesterday, and out for dinner iwth friends as our old uni mate was back from Norway for a week. Had lovely time but has left me totally shattered - not used to socialising these days! :) got up today eventually after just wanting to stay in bed all day! and have done NOTHING! did watch a whole weeks recap of come dine with me - no better than Xfactor really ;)

just thought, i'll check over my intro but not much point really as its gone to boss now! and its getting late, in lab all week and want to just go to bed! Maybe, like Eska I need to just call it a wasted day and look for tomorrow! but I feel guilty every time i'm not at my desk at the moment!!!

anyway, just really wanted to get it off my chest and hope others are doing better and had good productive weekend!

Studying another MSc

Hi Malsaffar,

Congratulations on a masters in immunology! Personally, I would say think about undertaking a second in another science subject VERY seriously! why do you want to do one, is it just to keep you busy, if so I would go and get work experience for a year and spend the time finding funding for a phD in the meantime! I work in a microbiology lab, and we have a guy who finished PhD two years ago almost after having 2 masters in science subjects and he sadly can't find a job as he has hardly any real work experience except for undergrad, masters, masters, phD and is a bit older now (obviously don't know your age, and it shouldnt be an issue but when 40+ and fighting with 24 year olds for first postdocs I think he finds it tough). Overall he has taken 10 years to complete these + 2 years out of work just doing odd things and trying to write papers.

I would think about what you want to get out of your PhD, your career future, your age on completion and whether doing another masters would really benefit this! Obviously everyone is different but I just wanted to tell you about the downside of this. Unfortunately in lab based science, it is very competitive, and getting even more so with recession and funding issues. Postdocs are thin on the ground and unfortunately whether you have 2 masters and PhD or just undergrad and PhD may not put you ahead of the crowd! You need to be able to justify in future WHY you do it.

Good luck with whatever decision you make, (up)

Evening all, i'm on the midnight train tonight! choo choo! :)

Interview was ok thats Teek, didn't get much sleep again unfortunately but managed to struggle may way through it, did my demonstration ok and then they quizzed me for an hour!!!!! not sure how my answers were but they kept asking me stuff so can't have been too bad!? find out next week so will keep ya'll posted!

just having cup of coffee and some chocolate, read afew papers and going to tackle this last section - hopefully! I keep saying that then finding new and interesting stuff and trailing that too!!! fingers crossed by time i go to bed tonight intro is ready for final edit over weekend!

Hope Bilbo and Sue are doing ok too tonight!?

I'm not sure about the inspired by crisp nights i'm afraid, I just see it as the start of coldness, increased heating bills and my SAD onset! but must try and stay optimistic...... :)

Best of luck for the midnight run folks......over and out

Hi Sheena and Bilbo!
Well done B on a good hours productive editing! :) hope you get some good sleep!

Thanks Sheena, just chilling out before interview, slept even worse last night so not feeling great, feel like I cant even think so the interview is going to be pretty funny I feel! complete lack or recall, but hopefully when i relax into it all will be fine!
Sorry to hear you got a cold, remember getting better has to be your number one priority! keeping going through it will only tire you more and slow your immune system! get rest and keep calm and you'll be back on the road ASAP! :)

come to campus library for first time in ages - charging £1.20 for a cup of tea - when did students become so rich!!! better go to cash machine if i want some caffeine before interview!! :(

have a good day all! (up)
