No, but what makes you think you deserve a place less than the competition?! Time for some self-belief! You can do it!!

One thing is certain: If you don't apply, you won't get a place! Go for it, you have nothing to lose and potentially, could get a place on a course that you really want to do. It's a no-brainer!!

Good luck with your application

Anyone have any cold remedies?
spss or excel?
A

Yes, SPSS is a proper stats package whereas Excel is basically a spreadsheet utility with a few stats thrown in. Most unis will run SPSS courses - it's not that difficult when you know how to set up your data and will be well worth the effort.

HI Matthew82

Just to let you know that our studentship will be advertised on FindaPhD shortly (next couple of weeks hopefully) if you're interested in a pharmacology/toxicology type project...

How are you celebrating?
A

I didn't really celebrate passing my PhD (other than a few drinks in the pub after the viva) - I was too exhausted from the pre-viva cramming and stress to party too hard. However, I did celebrate my PhD graduation (3 months later) with a big party!

Magnetic Bracelets 'Ease Arthritis Pain'
A

Hello

The magnetic bracelets used in that study were: "Standard neodymium magnets set in a steel backing cup, with the open side facing the ventral wrist, creating a fluctuating magnetic pattern across the bracelet. The field strength at the wrist contact surface was 170-200 mTesla." Be careful about buying one, there are many such devices on the market and some of them are of dubious quality. You could perhaps contact the corresponding author of that study as he may be able to advise you on purchasing the bracelets used in the study:

Thesis writeup - excel charts are driving me mad!

I've had no problems using the following method: First, make sure your font size (axis labels etc) are a decent size (Arial 18, for eg). Also, you can thicken the axis lines and increase the thickness of the markers and/or joining lines so that, when reduced, they still look good. Then make sure you have your Excel file open at the worksheet containing your graph (NB not an embedded chart, make the chart a whole page in Excel). Then in Word, go to INSERTOBJECTCREATE FROM FILE then browse for your Excel file (the one you have open). It should appear looking good and you should be able to edit from within Word if necessary. I usually insert the file into a single cell table within Word too, helps to keep it centred etc. Good luck.

How are you importing your Excel charts? There is more than one way and some ways work well and others don't! If you describe the way you're currently doing it, I might be able to recommend an alternative method...

Getting the Viva organised
A

In my Uni, the arrangements for the viva are made BEFORE submission of the thesis i.e the examining panel are appointed. The exact day may not be finalised until after submission (but it is sometimes arranged before, based on the student's intended submission date).

never quite good enough :-(

Academia is all about the knock backs e.g. rejected papers, rejected grants, rejected conference abstract, rejected fellowship applications (weep!) et cetera! It's hard sometimes. We have to remember though that at this level, competition is **really** tough and there is no shame in not 'making the grade' every now and again. We can also take comfort in the fact that the peer review process isn't infallible and if someone has failed to recognise the genius in our work, more fool them! As you say, onwards and upwards!
