Extension to correction ?

Thanks Mara Sp for the insight !
I hope to bounce back after this illness and finish my RnR.

Extension to correction ?
C

Has anyone been sick while doing his/her PhD corrections, to the extent that of being unable to do any work for 2 months ?
I've been given 12 months to revise & resubmit my work, but I've been sick for 2 months already.
Can I forward a medical letter to my uni to let them know of my illness, and perhaps get an extension to the correction period ?
Looking forward to hear from anyone in the same situation.

Viva - Major Corrections

Quote From JStanley:

CharlieB, I also felt like vomiting every single day over the last while working on it. My heart goes out to you. Try take solace from our very own Marasp who got her award recently after a long fight. You will both get there but, yeah, I'm sorry to say it but kicking and screaming... I know you might be concerned that this strategy might be tantamount to shooting yourself in the foot but I don't know. This has made me think a lot about how these things work. I can only share my experience.
You both deserve better. I wish you both the very best with this.

Thanks J Stanley. I will try my best.

Viva - Major Corrections

Hi Anz07

I sympathise with your predicament.

I had my viva 3 months ago and was given an RnR verdict. I've been given 12 months to resubmit, and I am struggling at the moment due to personal reasons. I suppose I will have to start my corrections next month.

To be honest, I feel like vomiting when I see my thesis. But I have to persevere because my future depends on the completion of the revised work.

I hope you will stay strong throughout this ordeal of re-writing. It's not easy, but it is something that needs to be done sooner or later.

Sending you lots of virtual hugs !

Dr Marasp!

Congratulations Marasp, you are an inspiration to me. I too got an R n R but I'm going to try my best to finish my amendments and corrections in 7 months. Thanks for sharing your story with us.

Major corrections 6 mnths kind words please

Hi J stanley

Congrats ! But for now, take a good break from your thesis. Go somewhere for a good rest; a seaside trip or where ever. You'll come back after the break with new spirits hopefully !

My viva outcome was much worse. I got an R n R. I've been given 1 year to do my corrections. So now I'm doing a little bit at a time, in between my translating and proofreading jobs.

You're going to be fine. Take care of your health and you'll be bouncing back in no time !

How does one talk about unemployment...
C

Thanks Elizabeth & Marasp for your views.

I am not in the UK at the moment; I'm back in my home country. I suppose I am still lucky because there are many part-time tutor posts in my subject area. The downside is that one needs to travel to get to the colleges/unis, and this may take some one or two hours.

I am hopeful that there will be one or two colleges/unis who might be interested in me in the next few months. Failing that, I will just go the part-time route and divide my time between two or three colleges.

Thanks Pjlu for your kind advice.

In some communities, the grown-up child is expected to contribute to the family's expenses, especially during festivities. I had been doing this for the past few years, but I don't think I can do this with my currently miserable finances.

I am going to let my mom know about the state I am in very soon.

Regarding my unfair dismissal, there were a few other tutors facing the same predicament in my uni. Basically, we were booted out as we did not manage to submit in 4 years' time. I managed to submit just in time, but as I had two leave of absences (in the UK), my uni back home refused to recognise this extra extension period.

I don't wish to pursue this matter due to personal reasons. I would rather find a post somewhere else.

...to one's parents ?

I've been unemployed since April due to an unfair dismissal.

My family knows nothing about this, except for my baby sister and brother. I am the guarantor of their study loans, so I felt I had to let them know.

My parents have hinted on me to help them renovate the house, etc, etc, and such matters which involves having lots of money. They still think that I am teaching at the uni.

Does anyone know if it is worth it to have a good talk with them about MY finances ?

Concerned about starting job without PhD

I say, grab the job ! You can always do the PhD later !

How long did you wait from submission to viva?
C

I submitted at the end of April and had my viva in mid-September, taking into account the semester break, the Commonwealth Games, the Scottish referendum, etc etc.

viva failed

Hi Tuanito

I can identify with your feelings. I had my viva two weeks ago and was disappointed with the r & r outcome.

Well, I just got the viva report yesterday, and it doesn't look that bad actually. The examiners have helpfully pointed out the areas where I have to add/ improve.

I was given one year to do my corrections, so I'm going to start next week. I try to be positive about the whole thing, and I hope you can do the same too.

All the best !

Revise & Resubmit :(

Thanks everyone for the advice :)

Just received an e-mail from my sup informing me that the post-viva report would be ready in two weeks' time. Meanwhile, I've booked a short holiday for me & the family. I will also try to get hold of motivational books to keep myself upbeat about the whole situation.

Many thanks again !

Revise & Resubmit :(
C

Hi everyone

I had my viva (humanities)last week, and after two hours of waiting, I was given the revise and resubmit verdict. It was an unexpected outcome for me. I have 12 months to make the necessary amendments and correction. The examiners felt that my theoretical framework was unsuitable with the analysis I had made and they also felt that my discussion was lacking a few aspects.

I was upset but I managed to hide my disappointment - I shook hands with the examiners and thanked them for their views. However, back in my supervisor's room, I couldn't help but break down in front of him. I had taken 4 months off studies due to health problems and just recently had another health scare. My sup kindly told me that we would work through the thesis together and make full use of the 12 months.

I had to submit the thesis at the end of April as it was the maximum deadline. I knew it was not perfect, but I just had to submit it as it was the requirement of the bond that I had signed with my employee. I am now waiting for the examiners' report, which I think should be a very long one based on their post-viva comments.

Not proud of the viva outcome but I keep telling myself it could be worse :(

Final hurdle.. can I do it?
C

Hi Starsgoblue

I was in the same situation as you are. I managed to finish in 4 years and 4 months (including leave of absences). I was in poor health for a few months.

A coursemate who started 10 months later than me, finished 4 months earlier :D

I suppose you just have to bite the bullet and stick to it until the end. Maybe what you can do is divide the number of words you have to write (40K) with the number of months you have left ? So that will give you 10K words (plus minus) to write each month.

All the best; I am living proof of a slow writer !
