Writing up whilst pregnant: plea for words of support!
C

Hi GibsonGirl

I have a wee boy who is about 30 months old. I'm scheduled to submit my thesis in 3 months' time. I've written some 65K words but there are still some holes in my thesis. No to mention, my references /bibliographyare all over the place !

What I've done for the past 6 months or so is maintain 2 hours of work per day. Sometimes I disappear to the library, other times I just try to write at home. If you can afford a babysitter, perhaps that would allow you a few hours to focus on your work.

I am a slow writer actually and I tend to procrastinate but if I keep up this momentum, I think I would be able to have some 80 K words in two months' time.

If you are working full-time, maybe it would be advisable for you to get some unpaid leave to enable you to complete your thesis?

Hope that helps !

Happy new year 2014 everyone !

I managed to work during the Christmas break and finished redrafting one chapter. I have one more chapter left to redraft. Hopefully I will get to work on my references after that.

Incognito Junior, I try to work around my kids' schedule, and it is not easy. I would be very lucky to get 2 hours of work done every day. I just have to hold on for the next few months though...

Hi SazzyCzar, I didn't want to read and run, so I just want to let you to know that you have all my sympathies. Dr Jekyll has given very good advice. Perhaps for the time being, you could have a short break. After a week or two, you'd probably feel better and can clearly look at what needs to be done. All the best !

Hi everyone

Well I've got three proper chapters now. I need to re-draft two more chapters in the coming 4 months, and do my references as well.
My original plan of re-drafting one chapter per months has not been that successful due to an illness that I suffered in October. However, I managed to get some leave of absence and now feel a lot better.
It is so difficult trying to juggle so many things at once - in my case, family and studies for me. Well anyway, I managed to get two eyetests booked for my boys, and their dental appointments also next week. It's going to be so hectic now that the holidays are coming soon. I can anticipate a lot of remote hogging between me & the kids during the hols...grr !

Humanities PhD and typos?
C

Hi

Firstly, congrats for submitting your thesis ! I'm in Humanities too, and I'll be submitting in 4 months' time.

I think you already know that there's not much you can do right now. What is done is done. You will just have to wait and hope that everything goes fine. Good luck !

Sickness Rant

Hope you are well now, constantly confused. Take care. I myself am applying for two months' leave of absence due to a recent health issue.

Thanks rubygem and incognito for your words of encouragement. I will try to get perhaps two months leave of absence.

Anyone planning to do or doing a PhD in Arts and Humanities?

Hi dotdotung, I am doing a Phd in History. I've been studying since 2010 and there seems to be no end in sight ! I hope to complete in 4 months' time eventually.

I am about 4 months away from my submission date. Just discovered last week that I have a health issue. Looks like I will have to apply for leave of absence of at least one months. Not happy with the way things are as I had been working hard to submit a chapter three weeks ago. I was going around like a headless chicken trying to juggle so many things. I feel very helpless. I've informed my SV who told me to apply for the leave.

Sorry for this dismal post. Just to remind you guys that some things will make you upset at the last minute. Hope everyone will stay safe and healthy, especially since it's now winter in the UK !

All the best Jineo...remember, the best thesis is a finished thesis !

Thanks Psychresearcher and Patseya

I contacted the Printing Services people at my uni and they gave me a quote of 24 pounds for printing and comb-binding (soft-binding) two thesis of 200 pages. And they can deliver it to the Submissions Office for me !

That sounds cool, doesn't it ? Now if only I can get the actual thesis done :D

Thanks psychresearcher for the suggestion. I hadnt't really thought of that. I shall e-mail the Uni's print services tomorrow to ask for more details. I hope the people there wouldn't mind delivering the documents via internal mail !

Due to a change in circumstances, I may be forced to submit my thesis from overseas. It's about 5 months from now but I'm feeling nervous already.

I had looked at the possibility of returning to the UK to submit my thesis in person (the flight ticket would cost me 600 pounds !) as well as printing it myself, then having it bound at a local print shop in my hometown and POSTING it from overseas to the Submissions Office ( postal costs would be something like the equivalent of 100 pounds in local currency...)

So now I'm looking at options which enable me to have my thesis printed and bound in the UK, then possibly delivered to the Submissions Office as well.

One well-known company is giving me a quote of 15 pounds per thesis ( 200 pages printed and soft-bound). Not bad actually. That however, does not include courier charges to my uni in Glasgow !

Any other reliable and reasonably-priced options, guys ?
