Thanks - I will and the same to you with your PhD!

It was quite funny in a way, they told me by email that I hadn't been shortlisted and later sent an email saying they were considering my application and would be in contact in due course. I think those in their HR dept. need to communicate better.

Tomorrow is a new day, make it a new start and three words are better than no words. Starting is the hardest part and you've done it!

Oh, I wouldn't. If I can get a job in Australia before I get one here I'm going as I think I'd regret it otherwise.

I hope it's easier to make friends in Australia than it is here because I find people here are reluctant to embrace new friendships or get to know new people socially.

Thanks for posting!

Quote From whynot:

Some people never get use to the heat. Others wonder if they could ever go back to the cold. The northern parts of Australia (e.g. Queensland) are a great place in the winter. Some UK immigrants struggle with the egalitarian, forthright, plain speaking Australian culture. Others revel in it.

Thank you so much for the very helpful post - it was great.

The heat could pose a problem for me but I absolutely adore forthright, plain speaking people and this could be the making for me. I hate false modesty and false politeness. Thanks again. All this information is fantastic.

How easy is it to go part time from full time?

I'm glad to hear you contacted them Waddett. Have you tried Mood Gym? I've heard great things about it. It's free and online, I think, but people do talk about it postively. Google it and try it.

Please let us know how you get on.

Sadly, no real success as yet and I contacted about 30 universities. Some academics got back and offered advice but no real take up which is a pity. I'll just have to keep searching the websites. Have submitted some hard copy applications as well and so fingers crossed...

It really is tough out there on the job front - I've applied for a LOT of things and haven't got any further but I'm OK as I know it's more the circumstances than anything to do with me.

Funding question - at end of PhD
D

I think it depends on the university. My understanding was if I finished in advance of the funding, the funding would cease (and so since I couldn't get a job I made sure I wasn't going to submit before the funding finished as it pays more than benefits and why rush to be on the dole?). I've heard of others who submitted before the funding period but received funding for the full three years. My advice would be to ask around your university.

I hope you're feeling a bit better today but please make an urgent appointment with the counselling service at your university, find out about the consequences for funding (to put you mind at rest). I honestly feel going from full-time to part-time is just some admin (but I'm not sure about the funding side of things).

Please let us know how you get on.

I'm glad we've helped a bit and do let us know how you get on and post here if you think the people on this forum can be of help. Please try not to be so hard on yourself as you've a lot to contend with but you will come through this.

First of all Waddett, please get help to get you through this very, very difficult period. That must be your priority. Please see your GP ASAP and make an appointment with the counselling service at your university first thing tomorrow morning. It will do you no harm but could do you a lot of good...

Find out for sure the situation as regards funding (phone the funders or ask those who awarded the funding) and talk things through with your supervisors. It is possible, that I can tell you.

Take good care of yourself and please do get some help to get you through this time.

Heidi,

I'm not sure what I can say that would be of practical help to you but my heart really does go out to you. Is there absolutely no way whatsoever that this deadline could be put back? Are you sure? Check with the students union and please, please, please get support from your university counselling service. At least then you'll have someone to talk things through with. Just tell the counsellor what you've told us and see what they can do.

Please feel free to post here as often as you need.

Take good care of yourself.
