Just to make you laugh, I've just completed an application, am on the last page and can't apply because I can't meet one essential criteria:-s

My fault entirely though, as I didn't read the person specification (sick, sore and tired of reading them).:$

Strangely enough, in terms of work, I found the corrections to be the hardest part and soul destroying.

I have to disagree with the first part of your post, I knew I could easily do a PhD because I had the ability, was prepared to work hard (actually prior to starting I'd built it up in my head to be more work than it actually turned out to be but I'm a natural worrier) was motivated and relentless as I knew I didn't want to run over time. For me, drawing up a flexible plan and trying to stick with that plan was what got me through. I worked steadily and consistently when I could (sometimes I wasn't able to due to lack of feedback, having to wait on things and so on.)

Determination, motivation, hard work and dealing with frustrations linked to set backs will get you through. It helps if you're interested in the topic (desirable but not necessarily essential) and have good, supportive supervisors. If you want it enough, you'll do it but you have to find a good reason to do it.

Given that you have a good job (even if it's not entirely what you want) and the economic climate which doesn't look like it will improve anytime soon, have you considered doing a PhD part-time? Now that really will require motivation and determination but it can be done.

I always read my stuff out loud and it works for me but I suspect my neighbour thinks I'm nuts!!!

How's everyone getting on in terms of job seeking? Any more success stories?

I would second what Lughna wrote. It'll not be easy for sure and will be very trying at times but on a positive note you have a good work ethic (as evidenced by your position), will have the support of colleagues I would like to think and should in some respects find it easier than other PhD students. Get your head down, focus and chip away at it regularly and you will get there.

Gearing up for next week and 'The Apprentice' I see.

Anyway, I can't be fired as you have to have a job for that to happen!:p
