Abstract :
Excitatory junction potentials have been recorded from smooth muscles during stimulation of their extrinsic autonomic nerves1–4. Recently similar potentials have been recorded from the smooth muscle of the vas deferens of the guinea pig in response to stimulation of its intrinsic nerves5. These potentials, when recorded with the sucrose gap technique, have characteristics similar to those recorded with intracellular electrodes. Both the sucrose gap and intracellular electrodes have now been used for investigating the inhibitory potentials of the guinea pig taenia coli during stimulation of its intrinsic nerves.

Abstract :
Transmural stimulation of the guinea-pig taenia coli leads to hyperpolarisation and relaxation,or to depolarisation, action potentials and contraction. The contraction is due to stimulation of cholinergie nerves. Evidence is presented which suggests that the relaxation may be only partly due to stimulation of the peripheral extensions of the periarterial sympathetic nerves.

Abstract :
Electrical synaptic transmission through gap junctions underlies direct and rapid neuronal communication in the CNS. The diversity of functional roles that electrical synapses have is perhaps best exemplified in the vertebrate retina, in which gap junctions are formed by each of the five major neuron types. These junctions are dynamically regulated by ambient illumination and by circadian rhythms acting through light-activated neuromodulators such as dopamine and nitric oxide, which in turn activate intracellular signalling pathways in the retina.The networks formed by electrically coupled neurons are plastic and reconfigurable, and those in the retina are positioned to play key and diverse parts in the transmission and processing of visual information at every retinal level.

Abstract :
The formation of a new derivative of aldosterone with heptafluorobutyric anhydride for gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) is presented. The highest and also the most prominent ion of this derivative is observed at m/z 734. The new derivative is, under the described conditions, reproducibly formed, is stable and has good gas chromatographic properties. These characteristics make the new derivative extremely suitable for selective, sensitive, precise and accurate analysis of aldosterone in serum by GC/MS in association with isotope dilution. This is proven by the agreement between the measurement results obtained by two laboratories for samples of three batches of lyophilized control serum. The sample pretreatment procedures used in each laboratory are described.

Abstract :
We show that a natural behavior, exploration of a novel environment, causes DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs) in neurons of young adult wild-type mice. DSBs occurred in multiple brain regions, were most abundant in the dentate gyrus, which is involved in learning and memory, and were repaired within 24 h. Increasing neuronal activity by sensory or optogenetic stimulation increased neuronal DSBs in relevant but not irrelevant networks. Mice transgenic for human amyloid precursor protein (hAPP), which simulate key aspects of Alzheimer's disease, had increased neuronal DSBs at baseline and more severe and prolonged DSBs after exploration. Interventions that suppress aberrant neuronal activity and improve learning and memory in hAPP mice normalized their levels of DSBs. Blocking extrasynaptic NMDA-type glutamate receptors prevented amyloid-β (Aβ)-induced DSBs in neuronal cultures. Thus, transient increases in neuronal DSBs occur as a result of physiological brain activity, and Aβ exacerbates DNA damage, most likely by eliciting synaptic dysfunction.
