Bug!!! really, I thought better of you than to rely on wiki for proof, everyone nows how unreliable it is. My findings on Kedgeree are garnered from years of field research and primary accounts!!

Thanks for the CV tip Katie21, will defo give it a go.

Raider! you must provide proof of such controversial challenges to established facts

It's Never To Early To Start...Right???

Hey st. barbarella, you have some great advice already. But I would also like to add that because the BA prepares you for the MA, and the MA for the PhD, the best way to get ready for your future academic achievements, in my view, is to go hell for leather on the BA.

That way you'll be more likely to get funding too.

Glad you've found something to make you happy!

RAH! Incompetent Staff!!!

Hi Sleepy Head,

I really think they should either get the essay to you (they could scan and email it), or get someone else to mark it. Surely given your current situation they could do that. Also what if you had another commitment at this time, they don't own you all the time, just for a few hours a week!!

You have my sympathy, organisation doesn't seem to be a strong point in alot of unis.

HELP! with PhD application cover letter

Hi Msindai.

I've done this twice, due to swapping supervisors, and my advice would be to just be genuine and give your real reasons - i.e. expertise and knowledge. Having said that, for my second email to my (almost) current sup I just said 'I think you are the best person to supervise this PhD' and didn't give a reason - I presumed this to be obvious from the info I gave him about my research.

Also, I didn't send an outline, just the title and a few sentences: very brief, and the detail came later.

Good luck.

I think people will find that Kedgeree was infact devised specifically for use by domestic science teachers in comprerhensive schools. Its purpose was revenge: a dish that would spill easily and spread with embarassing gusto across either level of a double decker bus. It found its strength of purpose when carried home covered in a tea towel by cheeky pupils. FACT.

When do you know if your good enough?

Hey Donzy,

It could be that you are actually getting better!!! It was only when I realised my writing was crap (by publishable standards) that I started to make big improvements!!!. Maybe you are now developing a stronger critical sense which is necessary for self editing.

I think most people go through a phase of thinking they can't do it, or that their project is rubbish, but we come through it.

Off to pastures new to complete my thesis

Good luck Hairui and Sleepyhead!! I too have been there.

And for Sleepyhead: I did not divulge every reason for my wish to transfer, just the safe ones, like that it was not the best department for my research, and personal circumstances changing. For me, there didn't seem any point in carrying it further - the new sup had no idea about my old circumtances and I just wanted to get on with things. I wouldn't consider this dishonest though - you don't have to tell people everything.

Doing a PhD, does it make you ugly?

Hey H, you've even grown a grey beard!!!! he he. I too have out weight on, about 1/2 a stone so far, but am on a mission to loose it. I do wear less make up and wash my hair less. My flat has suffered alot more than me, it's an absolute tip and I have washing left over from periods people around here are probably researching! so if I do manage to pull I won't be able to let them inside...

I have no teaching experience but still wants that lecturer job

I agree with Miss Spacey about the incremental snobbery which travels up through to the uk academic stratosphere. And, I think, if anything, it is gradually and very, very slowly, cracking in places, due to Oxbridge and many red bricks lacking expertise in newer disciplines such as film and television studies. But this is a very long standing state of affairs. Since the year dot I'd say.

My advice to anyone on this is to look at the departments they want to teach at, and find out where staff got their qualis from and where they publish. You'd need to at least equal that.

Also, I think the UK has very open policies on employing none UK qualified academics - unlike Canada, where I would love to work!!!, and which is almost a closed shop. I do sometimes pick up on undertones of general racism in the UK though - which shock me (although I haven't noticed any which would discourage employment in universities) - but I have no idea if this is worse than elsewhere.

I don't care who invented it, I just like it!! but yes, I've heard that too - that the idea of curry is a western appropriation of pre - existing indian foods. A colonial concept.

Well I feel a bit over dressed today. sans coat I'm fine, but I am wearing a skirt today so needed a big coat and my warmest one is a bright red bubble shape with a high funnel collar. I have a yuck, yuck cold and don't feel like being conspicuous, but am doomed to be noticed at a thousand paces: complete with my purple nose.
