Coping with depression whilst doing a PhD
G

I think if you take any 10 people randomly off the streets and analyze their behavior from a Psychological Perspective then only 2-3 will pass all their normality tests. We can see Aggression everywhere even in universities. I once observed personally how violent a top professor got when he found one of the undergrads drinking mineral water after a lab session and he was even not in any way near any equipment. We all have limitations but keeping us safe from the compulsive disorders of the others should be the first priority. It is only you who know what is the reason of your problem deep down into your own mind. Most of the depressive behavior has some physical reasoning behind it. Solve that if possible and your are off the hook.

Lost in my PhD: Lack of Support (I think).

Sorry I could not understand your thread completely. You are Biologist and studying remote monitoring of plants. Is that in the form of aerial photography? or is this some kind of microbiology related research?

Is this unusual?

Wally That is how I do it as well. I am happy like this.(up)

PhD Skills

Sneaks! The best strategy is to think carefully about what have you learnt after your PhD experience rather then going for fancy, strong words which even someone with a 3rd will have on their CVs. A short personal statement etc...

PhD identity - and what else?
G

According to my understanding PhD should give us more than an Identity. It should develop our way of thinking. Research should be without Prejudice and Bias. In everyday life people forget such golden rules and tend to diverge towards friends, families, personal gains etc... This developed thinking or training is not for materialistic gains alone but for making us a better human being. Socializing for negative activities is far worse then sitting isolated in a corner of a room and reading/writing an article in my view. If after doing PhD nothing changes especially 'the way we analyze matters around us' then it is of course a waste of time.

I miss PhD life :(

Dear Jepson! The Academic Politics is a big Hurdle in PhD studies. Sometime it does not help students at all. Every body sort of tries to pull in different directions sometimes. The real collaborators could be people who work on similar topics and are in similar circumstances. I am not a Behavioural Expert but Writing the Names of your Supervisors on your Publications will satisfy their egos. If someone else(a student collaborator or another expert from Industry) is involved then you are not required to write your supervisor names in my view.

I think Uni B will be more interested in the results you are producing rather than to play an active part in research publications. If they have requested you to work in a specific area to be applicable in uni B and are closely monitoring it in collaboration with A then they must be included in all articles.

What should our next office pet be?

Adam! He looks very healthy and muscular. Has he been castrated?

I miss PhD life :(

Danboy! I hope you are not missing the PhD pay. That gives a life style of living by hand to mouth. Now at least, you will have an intermediate location to save it.

funding-what to do first?
G

If you apply for self funded PhD's 90% supervisors will accept you. It looks good on their CVs. I will not recommend self funded PhD unless you are a genius in your field and know exactly what to do and have plenty of spare time to get a part time job or become teaching assistant.

I do not want to speak ethically but drinking is related to many diseases including liver and kidney diseases. The last time I had alcoholic drink was at the millennium.

Does anyone have any of these lying around?
G

Taking into consideration the charm you have brought into this forum with your vocabulary...I will give it a go as well may be a bit later.

I think that if I didn't have to get up early for the horse/work in the morning I would be much more of a night-time worker, but I try to stop by 1am at the latest.

Correct me if I am bit off track ' Is your PhD horse Related' Or you travel on your horse back to your uni. This would need a bit more parking space though... do not forget to leave the horse a sack of hay and a bucket of water in parking lot
